Nintendo Did Not Commemorate Its 100th Anniversary Celebration

Overview of Nintendo’s Historical Milestone

  • Nintendo’s centennial was understated, mirroring the company’s historical approach.
  • A past executive navigated the company through significant changes.

While many organizations would consider a century of operation a momentous milestone, Nintendo did not place significant emphasis on its 100th anniversary. A former employee has shed light on this pivotal point in the company’s history, indicating that this juncture was not marked with celebration.

Despite Nintendo’s longevity in the gaming industry, outlasting its primary competitors, Sony and Microsoft, the origins of the company often go unnoticed. Established in 1889, Nintendo’s 100th anniversary is now behind it, signaling a shift in the company’s culture and public persona over the years.

In a recent discussion with 4Gamer (reported by TheGamer), former Nintendo artist Takaya Imamura noted that the milestone was not an occasion of excitement, and there were no festivities planned. Imamura recounted how the previous president of Nintendo, Hiroshi Yamauchi, maintained a strict yet steady demeanor, urging team members to keep their composure regardless of circumstances. This differs markedly from the current image of Nintendo, largely shaped by charismatic figures like Shigeru Miyamoto, Reggie Fils-Aime, and the late Satoru Iwata, who have fostered a more vibrant and approachable company image.

Nintendo’s Unique Positioning in 1989

Imamura elaborated on Nintendo’s distinctive position within Japan in 1989. During this period of economic prosperity known as the Japanese asset price bubble, many companies prioritized keeping their employees satisfied, aiming to bolster morale. In contrast, Nintendo adopted a more restrained approach, demonstrating stability over exuberance. While the company now celebrates anniversaries of its games and franchises publicly, it took a different stance a century ago.

Although Yamauchi’s leadership style was perceived as stern, he was instrumental in guiding the company through pivotal changes—from its origins in card games to its evolution into toys and subsequently video gaming over 53 years. Nintendo has witnessed its share of triumphs and setbacks, achieving remarkable success with platforms like the Nintendo DS and Wii. However, it also grappled with the challenges posed by the Wii U, only to make a remarkable comeback with the Nintendo Switch. With anticipation building around the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, the industry is abuzz about the potential for continued success.

Looking ahead, while it may be a long journey until Nintendo reaches its 200th anniversary, it’s easy to envision the company still operating in the gaming realm—with celebrations likely more vibrant than what was witnessed a century prior.
