Alexi Hawley’s Insight on Niecy Nash’s Potential Return to The Rookie
In a revealing discussion, The Rookie creator and showrunner, Alexi Hawley, addressed the prospects of bringing back Niecy Nash to the series, following her tenure in the canceled spinoff, The Rookie: Feds. Nash, an Emmy-winning actress, portrayed Simone Clark in the spinoff, which focused on her journey as the oldest rookie at the FBI Academy. Unfortunately, due to complications from the writers’ and actors’ strike, coupled with disappointing ratings, the show was discontinued after just one season.
Latest Updates on Nash’s Return to The Rookie
During an interview with Rachel Foertsch from Screen Rant to mark the premiere of The Rookie‘s seventh season, Hawley was questioned about the potential for Nash’s return, particularly since the show has started integrating characters from her spinoff. Although he acknowledged Nash’s busy schedule with other commitments, he expressed optimism about her potential reappearance as Simone Clark.
We would obviously love to have Niecy [Nash] back in our universe. Niecy is a very busy woman, and so I guess I can say that we’re not necessarily going to see her again in the near term, but hold out hope that she’s got a window for us.
What Nash Returning Could Mean for the Series
Connecting with the Audience
Nash made her debut in a couple of episodes of the original series before leading her own. Her last appearance was in season five, yet The Rookie has continued to expand its universe, as evident in the recent return of character Garza (Felix Solis) from the spinoff. This continuity indicates that the link between the two series remains strong.
However, there are factors that might hinder Nash’s comeback. As previously mentioned, Nash is currently engaged in several other projects, including the crime thriller Grotesquerie and the legal drama All’s Fair, directed by Ryan Murphy, which is in production. Additionally, talks of a new spinoff from The Rookie are underway, revolving around a male cop from Washington state. This could shift the focus away from Nash’s character.
If all conditions align favorably, Nash’s return could provide much-needed closure to the storyline left hanging by the cancellation of The Rookie: Feds, giving fans a chance to reconnect with her character, who played a pivotal role in the spinoff.
Our Thoughts on Hawley’s Expectations
Optimism for the Future
While it appears that we may not see Simone Clark on screen soon, Nash’s range as an actress makes her a valuable asset for any storyline. Should the right opportunity arise, Hawley and his team should certainly consider integrating her back into the fold of The Rookie. Her presence could not only enrich the narrative but also bring joy to fans eager for more content from this beloved character.
