“Nicky Jam Withdraws Endorsement of Trump After Insult? Internet Reacts”
Puerto Rican musician Nicky Jam, known for his past support of former President Trump, has recently announced his decision to retract his endorsement for the upcoming U.S. Presidential election.
According to reports from CNN, Nicky Jam’s change of heart came after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made derogatory remarks about Puerto Rico at a rally held at Madison Square Garden in New York on October 27, describing the island as a “floating island of garbage.”
In a video shared with his 43 million followers on October 30, 2024, Jam discussed his initial support for Trump, which was rooted in his belief that it would benefit the U.S. economy, particularly for many Latinos residing there. He stated:
“Many immigrants are struggling due to the state of the economy. As a businessman, I believed Trump was the right choice. I never anticipated that just a short while later, a comedian would come out and insult my Puerto Rico.”
Once news of Nicky Jam’s withdrawal of support circulated on social platforms, reactions poured in from numerous users. Notably, many recalled an incident where Trump mistakenly introduced Nicky as a female during a rally in Los Angeles.
On X, user @Yashar shared the video, prompting responses such as:
“He didn’t after Trump called him a girl?”
Other comments included:
“He didn’t care until it happened to him,” noted one Twitter user.
“Didn’t Trump call him a woman?” added another.
“So the fact that Trump thought he was a woman wasn’t enough to sway him?” wrote another netizen.
Several commenters further voiced their skepticism:
“So when it affects him, he has morals,” lamented another user.
“So it was acceptable until it was directed toward him? Lol. Okay,” said another online commenter.
Nicky Jam previously sported a “Make America Great Again”cap at a Las Vegas rally
Last month, Nicky Jam appeared alongside Trump at a rally in Las Vegas, wearing a “Make America Great Again”cap and expressing his support for the former President. He stated:
“People from my background rarely meet the president. I consider myself lucky. We need you. We really need you to return as president,”he claimed.
Nicky Jam was not the only reggaeton artist to express support for Trump; however, several have since withdrawn their endorsements in response to Tony Hinchcliffe’s offensive comment.
The fallout continues for Trump as Hinchcliffe took to X on October 28, 2024, to clarify that his comments were intended as humor. He remarked:
“They have no sense of humor. It’s bizarre that a vice presidential candidate would take time out of their ‘busy schedule’ to dissect a joke taken out of context to portray it as racist. I adore Puerto Rico and vacation there. I joke about everyone…watch the entire set. I’m a comedian, Tim…might be time to reassess your perspective.”
For those unaware, the U.S. Presidential election is scheduled for November 5, 2024, during which citizens will vote for their preferred candidate to become the next President of the United States.
