Nicki Minaj has spent over a decade solidifying her status as the queen of rap. Since her industry debut in 2007, Minaj has released five studio albums, with a sixth on the horizon, embarked on four headlining tours, and received numerous accolades, including the MTV Vanguard Video Lifetime Award.
During her illustrious career, the talented rapper has also seized opportunities to showcase her acting prowess. In 2014, Minaj was cast as Lydia in Nick Cassavetes’ rom-com The Other Woman, where she portrayed the spirited assistant of Carly Whitten, played by Cameron Diaz.
This 2014 comedy film achieved significant Box Office success, amassing $196.7 million in revenue.
Nicki Minaj’s character serves as both assistant and confidante in the film
The Other Woman marked Nicki’s debut in live-action cinema, portraying Lydia, the stylish, vivacious assistant to Diaz’s character, a New York-based lawyer.
Beyond her role as an assistant, Lydia was also Carly’s confidante, sharing intimate details about her personal life and romantic relationships. Notably, Lydia was the first to learn about Carly’s love interest, Mark, being married.
As the plot unfolded, Carly teamed up with Kate King (played by Leslie Mann), Mark’s wife, to seek revenge on her unfaithful husband. They were later joined by Amber (played by Kate Upton), Mark’s second girlfriend. The three women schemed to make Mark’s life difficult while also forming a strong bond among themselves.
In a CapitalXtra interview with Manny Norte shortly after The Other Woman‘s release, Cameron Diaz spoke about her experience working alongside Minaj, saying:
“I love Nicki. She was fantastic. She blew us all away. She, you know, was so funny, so natural… what she had to do was difficult; it wasn’t easy, and she showed up and she just nailed it completely.”
Following The Other Woman, Minaj joined the Barbershop franchise
Nicki Minaj’s performance in The Other Woman, albeit brief, made a significant mark on the film industry. Two years later, the Pink Friday rapper was cast in another notable franchise, this time with a more substantial role.
Barbershop: The Next Cut premiered in April 2016, featuring Minaj as Draya, a stylist hired by Angie at the barbershop. In this film, Draya navigates a love triangle involving Rashad (played by Common) and Terri (played by Eve), with all three characters working together at the barbershop.
Fast forward nine years to September 17, 2024, when Eve, Minaj’s co-star, released her memoir, Who’s That Girl? In it, Eve disclosed that she began therapy before filming alongside Nicki Minaj.
The talented rapper responded kindly to this revelation on X, labeling it “groundbreaking”and a testament to her “emotional and spiritual maturity.”
Currently, Nicki Minaj is on her fourth headlining tour, having returned to the US for its American segment on September 5. The Pink Friday 2 tour will wrap up in Elmont, New York, on October 11. Additionally, Minaj has announced her upcoming sixth album, Pink Friday 3, with the release date expected to be revealed soon.
