Nicki Minaj, who currently reigns supreme in the music industry, has navigated a turbulent journey throughout her career. One significant challenge she faced during her upbringing was maintaining sobriety.
In the November 2023 issue of Vogue, Nicki candidly discussed a period in her life when she became briefly dependent on Percocet while living in Atlanta. Initially prescribed to alleviate her menstrual cramps, the drug effectively managed her pain, but the 41-year-old soon found herself consuming it even in the absence of discomfort. She reflected:
“Nobody informed me that this was a narcotic and that it could be addictive. Fortunately, I managed to regain control. However—once you have struggled with addiction, it’s something that lingers. If you’ve battled addiction in any form, as I have, you must always be mindful of the decisions you make.”
Since then, the artist known for her hit “Side to Side”has committed herself to avoid all forms of substance abuse.
Nicki Minaj revealed she feels a connection to her father during her Vogue interview
In her cover interview, which was published on November 9, 2023, Nicki Minaj reflected on her determination to stay clear of excessive drinking, whether at social gatherings or elsewhere. She shared:
“I truly believe I’ll always see myself as my father’s daughter.”
Her father, Robert Maraj, tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run accident in 2021. While growing up, he battled drug addiction, which often led to volatile behavior at home.
Nicki also acknowledged in her interview that she never viewed her father as a victim during her childhood, stating:
“I believed he was willfully addicted to substances, leading him to steal his children’s video games to support his habit. Just consider that—who would willingly choose such a path?”
She further elaborated:
“Now I understand that those struggling with addiction were not making those choices to hurt their families. Addiction overtook them; they were victims in their own right.”
Discussing the heightened vulnerability to substance misuse among celebrities, Nicki expressed that those living “under a microscope”face an increased risk. She pointed to examples of some of the “greatest celebrities,”including Michael Jackson, who faced ridicule for wanting to avoid public life, Whitney Houston, who was criticized, and Prince, who battled his own silent struggles.
The “Hey Mama”artist remarked:
“These individuals are among the best ever, yet one day they thought, ‘I’d prefer to self-medicate and retreat into my own world.’
This interview preceded the release of Nicki Minaj’s fifth studio album, titled “Pink Friday 2,”marking her return after a five-year hiatus since “Queen.”
Minaj expressed that her son’s smile brings her immense joy
Towards the conclusion of her interview, Nicki Minaj shared her insights on acceptance, saying:
“Do you know that sensation when you uncover a profound secret of life? For me, the concept of accepting what I cannot control never truly resonated. The desire for control can lead to constant dissatisfaction. Now, if I catch myself trying to manage everything, I remind myself what truly matters.”
When reflecting on what truly matters, the first person that came to Nicki’s mind was her son, affectionately known as “Papa Bear.”
Nicki revealed that her son had begun mimicking a peculiar sound in recent months, which she realized was an attempt to imitate her laughter. She described him as the most cherished of her little imitators.
On the topic of her son, Minaj expressed:
“Whenever I gaze into my son’s eyes, my spirit ignites. He remains blissfully unaware of the pressures I’ve faced juggling motherhood and my career.”
Nicki Minaj welcomed her son in October 2020, just a year after marrying her childhood sweetheart, Kenneth Petty. Their son celebrated his fourth birthday earlier this month.
