NFL Rumors: Vikings prepared for worst-case scenario with Sam Darnold under center if 2024 draft doesn’t go to plan
The Minnesota Vikings signed Sam Darnold during the 2024 NFL free-agency period in order to assist in the transition away from Kirk Cousins, who left for the Atlanta Falcons this year. Although he has primarily served as a backup quarterback for other teams in recent years, it is possible that this may not be the case for the Vikings.
According to ESPN’s NFL staff writer Kevin Seifert, there is a possibility that Darnold will become the starter in the 2024 NFL season. In a recent article, Seifert explained his reasoning, highlighting that head coach Kevin O’Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah have not dismissed this as a potential outcome.
Seifert stated that the franchise intends to assess potential QB prospects in the upcoming draft, with an emphasis on implementing an organizational framework for nurturing a rookie quarterback.
He further stated:
“On the other hand, they’re preparing for the possibility of riding with offseason free agent addition Sam Darnold in 2024 and then regrouping with either a quarterback drafted with a lower pick or perhaps a look ahead to the 2025 class.”
The 11th and 23rd overall picks in the 2024 NFL draft belong to the Vikings. They have the option to select a quarterback with one of these picks, however, their current position does not guarantee them one of the top prospects.
This presents them with the chance to potentially make a move and acquire their desired player, although it may prove challenging given the number of other teams ahead of them who are also eyeing a quarterback. This is why, as Seifert clarified, Sam Darnold could potentially be their starting quarterback in 2024, either alongside a lower-ranked QB prospect in this year’s draft or a different option in the following year.
Sam Darnold’s performance as a starting quarterback
If the Minnesota Vikings ultimately choose Sam Darnold as their starting quarterback for the 2024 NFL season, they may face significant challenges. Despite being given numerous opportunities to showcase his abilities as a starter, Darnold has consistently struggled to make a meaningful impact. His underwhelming career statistics include a record of 21-35 with 63 touchdowns and 56 interceptions.
Despite his poor record, he has still been able to remain in the NFL as a backup in recent years, including last season with the San Francisco 49ers. However, in order for the Vikings to stay competitive, they may need to consider selecting a quarterback with more potential than Darnold in the 2024 NFL draft.
In their current position, they have the chance to choose from J.J. McCarthy, Bo Nix, or Michael Penix Jr., as at least one of them is expected to be obtainable.
