NFL insider outlines why Cowboys’ Dak Prescott plan is “even more dangerous” than $33,000,000 franchise tag approach in 2020
After the 2020 season, NFL insider Jori Epstein expressed her thoughts on the Dallas Cowboys signing Dak Prescott to a four-year, $160 million contract.
As the 2024–25 NFL season approaches, the expiration date for the deal draws nearer. With each passing day, it appears less likely that the organization will reach an agreement on extending the quarterback’s contract. If no deal is made, Prescott may become a free agent in 2025, leaving the team without a clear strategy for the future.
In a recent discussion, senior NFL reporters Charles Robinson and Jori Epstein joined sports and entertainment host Jason Fitz to share their insights on Prescott’s ongoing contract negotiations. According to Epstein’s tweet, it seems that these discussions are not heading in the right direction.
“The Cowboys have played this game with Dak’s contract before. But this time, it’s more dangerous.”
Epstein believes that the Cowboys could be taking a significant risk by delaying Prescott’s contract extension, especially considering that they placed a $33 million exclusive franchise tag on him in 2020.
This is because the player’s choices will no longer be affected by them after the 2024 season. In 2021, Dallas signed Prescott to a four-year contract extension that includes a clause preventing the team from using the franchise tag on him.
If the organization is unable to reach an agreement with Prescott and is unable to tag him, he will become a free agent in the upcoming offseason. The Cowboys’ situation appears bleak as Prescott holds eventual control over his NFL future due to a no-trade clause in his contract.
Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, will be faced with a decision to either meet Dak Prescott’s salary requirements or release him at the end of the season as stipulated in his contract.
Despite the quarterback’s underwhelming performance during the postseason, it is doubtful that the Cowboys will be able to find a definitive replacement in the near future.
Will Dak Prescott’s upcoming contract solidify him as one of the highest-paid QBs in the NFL?
It is expected that Dak Prescott will request the highest paying quarterback contract in the NFL from the Dallas Cowboys in his upcoming deal.
Joe Burrow became the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL last year after signing a five-year, $275 million agreement.
Despite currently holding that status, it is anticipated that he will lose it this offseason. According to Jordan Schultz, the Cowboys are prepared to offer Prescott a contract worth at least $60 million a year, making him the highest-paid player in the NFL.
The amount is significantly higher than the $55 million that the Cincinnati Bengals pay Burrow every year. According to Spotrac, Dak Prescott is expected to sign a four-year contract worth $214 million, with a guaranteed amount of $169 million.
