Apple has successfully completed its transition to Apple Silicon for Macs, but the tech giant is now embarking on a new mission to develop essential components in-house. Reports from Bloomberg indicate that Apple is working on a proprietary Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip, expected to debut in 2025.

Introducing Proxima: A Game-Changer for Apple Devices

The forthcoming chip, internally codenamed “Proxima,”will be integrated into the next-generation Apple TV and an upgraded HomePod mini speaker. Notably, this chip will support Wi-Fi 6E, enhancing the wireless connectivity experience for users.

Strategic Advantages of In-House Development

By developing this chip internally, Apple aims to gain greater control over its wireless hardware. This strategic move will optimize how its devices connect to wireless networks, enhance interaction between devices, and improve pairing capabilities with other products. Such advancements are crucial as Apple continues to expand its ecosystem of connected devices.

Impact on Partnerships and Suppliers

This transition might have significant implications for Broadcom, Apple’s current supplier, which receives about 20% of its revenue from dealings with Apple. Nevertheless, the partnership won’t entirely dissolve; Broadcom will continue to supply radio frequency filters for Apple’s modems. Additionally, both companies are collaborating on a next-generation cloud server chip.

Proxima’s Background and Future Prospects

The Proxima chip has been under development for several years and is distinct from the modem chip that Apple is also designing as a potential alternative to Qualcomm’s offerings. The iPhone SE 4 is anticipated to be the first device sporting Apple’s in-house cellular modem.

Challenges Ahead

Although Apple is poised to launch this innovative chip next year, there are concerns regarding its ability to compete with Broadcom’s expertise in wireless technology. Any operational issues arising in leading devices such as the iPhone or Mac could pose significant challenges for Apple.

Previous Efforts and Manufacturing Insights

It’s important to highlight that Proxima is not Apple’s first foray into designing wireless chips; the company has developed custom chips for the Apple Watch and AirPods. Future production of this in-house chip will occur at TSMC, with plans for it to be incorporated into products like iPhone, iPad, and Mac by 2026.

Conflicting Timelines: Analyst Insights

Interestingly, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests a different timeline, indicating that the new Wi-Fi chip could be launched with the iPhone 17 series as early as next year. He also forecasts that Apple will complete its transition to custom wireless chips within the following three years.
