Newzoo’s Early Digital Sales Data Reveals Toby Fox’s Deltarune Leading Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Charts in Key Markets

Newzoo’s Insights on Nintendo Switch 2 Digital Sales

Global analytics organization Newzoo has unveiled a comprehensive report assessing early digital sales data for the Nintendo Switch 2. The company’s product manager, Max Otten, took a closer look at determining whether this new gaming console could serve as a sustainable platform for third-party developers and publishers.

Top Competitors in June 2025 Sales

In his analysis, Otten examined digital sales figures from June 2025 across six significant markets, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. Surprisingly, three of the five best-selling titles on the Nintendo Switch 2 during this period were third-party games, with the standout being Toby Fox’s much-anticipated sequel to Undertale, Deltarune.

While Deltarune‘s success was somewhat anticipated—having secured a spot in Newzoo’s previous report detailing revenue rankings—it was still shocking to see it surpass the established favorite, Mario Kart World, in terms of digital sales. Importantly, it’s worth noting that the sales data sourced by Newzoo exclusively covers digital transactions, excluding physical sales. In fact, a staggering 82% of Switch 2 owners in the US also purchased Mario Kart World in a physical format, contributing to its lower digital rankings.

Welcome Tour’s Surprising Performance

Another unexpected highlight from Newzoo’s findings is the performance of Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, which secured the second position in digital sales, notably placing ahead of Mario Kart World. Otten suggests that this may be attributed to its low price point and the absence of exclusive launch titles, which drove consumer interest.

A Diverse Top Five

The remaining entries in the top five were Minecraft at number four and No Man’s Sky at number five. While Minecraft‘s presence was expected, No Man’s Sky raises eyebrows given that Cyberpunk 2077 on the Switch 2 has emerged as one of the highlights among third-party releases, particularly in the US market.

Interestingly, when Otten shifted his focus to exclusives on the Nintendo Switch 2, the rankings noted a familiar face in the top position: Mario Kart World, with Fantasy Life I in second, followed by Cyberpunk 2077, No Man’s Sky, and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, again showcasing a mix of first-party and third-party titles.

Monthly Active Users Highlight Nintendo’s Strength

Among the various lists presented by Otten, the only one dominated by first-party Nintendo titles was the ranking for top five games by monthly active users for June 2025. Here, Mario Kart World, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons occupied first, third, fourth, and fifth places respectively, while Fortnite was the sole third-party game earning the second spot.

Conclusion: A Mixed Landscape for Third-Party Titles

In closing his report, Otten noted, “While first-party titles command overall sales leadership, there are clear pockets of spending on third-party content—especially for titles that are well-optimized, exhibit genre diversity, or provide unique experiences for the platform.” He added that the early indicators are promising, with players showing interest in enhanced ports, narrative-driven games, and genres less commonly seen on the Switch platform.

As we progress further into the Nintendo Switch 2’s lifecycle, more insights will emerge, revealing the true potential of this gaming ecosystem for third-party developers. Although the current analysis focuses on early sales in select markets, it does highlight that new third-party offerings can achieve significant success. Future months will reveal how the landscape evolves and which titles will continue to resonate with players.
