New Summarization Features Added to ‘Apple Intelligence’ Writing Tools for Windows

WritingTools v6 Update: Enhanced Features for Windows Users

A few months back, we shared insights into WritingTools, an innovative open-source application mimicking Apple Intelligence’s functionalities on Windows systems. Today, we are excited to announce that WritingTools has undergone a significant transformation with the launch of v6, introducing an array of new capabilities, an upgraded model, and numerous quality-of-life enhancements.

What’s New in WritingTools v6?

Available now on GitHub, WritingTools v6 has unveiled a revamped Chat Mode featuring a dedicated window for discussions, akin to popular tools like Copilot or ChatGPT. Users can engage in conversations about summaries and conveniently copy responses formatted as Markdown. Additionally, several optimizations have been implemented to streamline the application, including:

  • Automatic updates on boot
  • An improved user interface for easier settings management
  • A significant reduction in application size, effectively halving it
  • Default integration of Gemini 2.0 Nano, with options for alternate large language models (LLMs) in the settings

Known Issues to Note

Despite its enhancements, the update does come with a few known issues:

  • Some users may experience difficulties with the default hotkey functionality. To remedy this, simply change the hotkey to ctrl+` or ctrl+j and restart the application. Be advised that if a hotkey is already assigned to another program, WritingTools may not capture it. The suggested alternatives are generally available.
  • The initial launch of Writing Tools.exe might be slower than expected due to antivirus software scanning the new executable. However, subsequent launches will resume normal speed once the application is loaded into RAM.

Future Developments

Looking ahead, the developer of WritingTools has committed to incorporating user feedback into future releases. Upcoming features are set to include options for editing button prompts, creating and rearranging custom buttons, and much more.

How to Get WritingTools

To take advantage of the latest features, download WritingTools for Windows from GitHub. This application is entirely free and open-source. Please note that an active Gemini API key is necessary for use, with the application guiding you on how to obtain it during the initial setup. Additionally, an internet connection is required, as the app does not support offline functionality.
