PlayStation 5 Welcomes Back Classic Themes in Upcoming Update
In a delightful move celebrating the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand, Sony has announced that PS5 owners will soon have access to nostalgic console themes from previous PlayStation generations. This feature, which had been temporarily available, is set to make its grand return with a system update scheduled to roll out globally on April 24, 2025.
New Features Enhance User Experience
According to a PlayStation Blog post by Shuzo Kikuchi, the vice president of product management at Sony Interactive Entertainment, the upcoming update will introduce a new audio feature named Audio Focus. This innovative setting aims to enhance the gaming experience by amplifying softer sounds, such as footsteps, making them more discernible for players using headphones.
Community Demand Drives Nostalgic Updates
The relaunch of the beloved console themes is a direct response to enthusiastic fan requests. Kikuchi expressed his gratitude for the community’s feedback, stating:
“During our 30th anniversary celebrations, we surprised our fans with a limited time selection of nostalgic customization features for the PS5 System UI to honor the four PlayStation consoles that paved the way for PS5: PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.”
He further noted, “Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from our community, we’re happy to bring back the look and feel of the four console designs for players to customize the home screen on PS5!”
Finding and Using the Themes
Once the update is completed, PS5 console owners can access these cherished themes through a new section in their system settings titled ‘Appearance.’ The ability to personalize the Home screen with various themes has been a long-standing feature highly regarded by PlayStation fans since the PS3 era.
Looking Ahead to More Customization
The return of these classic themes is just the beginning, and there is hope that this move will pave the way for additional customization options, particularly game-specific themes. While some first-party and second-party titles already offer themed settings for the Welcome menu, the comprehensive UI changes reminiscent of the anniversary celebration could be a highly sought feature in the future. Players are eagerly anticipating more options like these to enhance their gaming immersion.
