Microsoft Unveils Windows 11 Preview Build 22621.4800 in Beta Channel

Microsoft has rolled out a fresh preview build of Windows 11, denoted as Build 22621.4800 (KB5050085), which is now available in the Beta Channel. This update brings a variety of enhancements, most notably the introduction of new PC specification cards designed to provide users with easy access to essential hardware information about their systems, including details about the processor, graphics card, memory, and storage.

Key Features of the Update

[Widgets]

  • The update allows web developers to leverage existing web content to create dynamic and interactive widgets for Windows 11’s widget surfaces. More details can be found here.

[File Explorer]

  • To address some concerns, the change allowing File Explorer to open in a new tab by default has been temporarily disabled. This originally started with Build 22635.4580.

[Windows Backup]

  • Post-restoration from backup during the Windows Setup experience (OOBE) on new PCs, users will see a standard Windows 11 taskbar. Apps can still be found in the Start menu and can be pinned to the taskbar for quick access.

[Search on the Taskbar]

  • Increased capabilities for web search providers in Windows Search, especially for users in the European Economic Area (EEA), which include improved clarity regarding provider attribution in tabs.

[Settings Enhancements]

The new “top cards”feature under Settings > System > About offers a straightforward overview of critical PC specifications, including processor, RAM, storage, and GPU. This innovation aims to facilitate informed decisions about potential hardware upgrades while providing a clear snapshot of the PC’s capabilities. Note that these top cards will not appear on managed commercial PCs yet.

Additionally, the Settings homepage is launching for commercial customers using managed PCs. This feature includes existing cards such as “Recommended settings” and “Bluetooth devices” along with two new enterprise-centric cards detailing device information and accessibility preferences. For those utilizing both work/school and Microsoft accounts, a new accounts card will also be available. The rollout for these features is being implemented gradually.
