Marvel has made significant strides in the free-to-play gaming arena, with notable successes like Marvel Snap. Released in late 2022, this mobile game quickly captured the attention of players, racking up over 12 million downloads in its first month. Although it has likely experienced player attrition since then, Marvel Snap continues to thrive, with regular updates keeping the community engaged.
Another game that has taken off is Marvel Rivals, which launched in December. In just a short time, it has attracted over 20 million players. With an ambitious roadmap for post-launch content, it’s poised to retain a significant portion of its initial user base. Given the ongoing success of both Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals, Marvel might be enticed to delve deeper into the free-to-play market, particularly exploring a genre that could refresh its gaming lineup.
The Need for a New Marvel MMO

DC Universe Online: A Veteran Showing Its Age
Launched in January 2011 for PS3 and PC, DC Universe Online has remained a fixture in the MMO landscape for over 14 years—an impressive feat for a free-to-play title. Its longevity is a testament to the dedicated developers who have consistently delivered quality content to its loyal fanbase.
As of now, DC Universe Online has released its 48th episode, titled “Harley Quinn vs. Apokolips.”However, with the passage of time, the game is beginning to show signs of age. Players have expressed concerns over its dated graphics and animations, as well as a combat system that can feel repetitive and clunky, a remnant of older MMO design.
Despite its legacy, the risk remains that a new competitor could easily overshadow DC Universe Online. For Marvel to take the lead, any upcoming MMO must prioritize innovative features, adopting the immersive elements seen in today’s leading titles. A successful new Marvel MMO should boast a unique art style, smooth animations, dynamic combat systems, and a wealth of content available from day one, with additional expansions in the pipeline.
It’s notable that Daybreak Games, the studio behind DC Universe Online, previously attempted to develop a Marvel MMO, which was unfortunately canceled in May 2022.
Filling the Void Left by Marvel Heroes
Marvel’s pursuit of a large-scale MMO is not new. In 2013, the company introduced Marvel Heroes, an action-RPG MMO that initially debuted in early access with 21 playable characters and three unique skill trees for each. The game had a rocky start but gradually gained traction after its full launch in 2015, receiving positive reviews as new content was integrated, and gameplay mechanics improved.
Unfortunately, the game’s fortunes soured following the departure of David Brevik, the former CEO of Gazillion Entertainment, in 2016. After Dave Dohrmann took the helm, players noticed delays in updates, and amid allegations of misconduct against Dohrmann, the studio faced turmoil. In November 2017, Disney ended its partnership with Gazillion, leading to an abrupt shutdown of the studio and the loss of a beloved game.
The gaming community still remembers the void that Marvel Heroes left behind. A new Marvel MMO could capture the imagination of fans and restore the franchise’s legacy within the realm of online gaming.
