Midgar Studio Revives Interest with Edge of Memories

After several years of relative silence, French developer Midgar Studio has officially unveiled Edge of Memories, a sequel to their critically acclaimed title, Edge of Eternity. Unlike its predecessor, which embraced the classic JRPG format, this new title is set to redefine the experience as a full action RPG featuring real-time combat. Despite the shift in gameplay style, it remains heavily influenced by the artistic and animation aesthetics characteristic of Japanese games. This ambitious project is being developed using the advanced Unreal Engine 5 and will be published by Nacon, a company that acquired Midgar Studio in 2022.

Exploring the Continent of Avaris

The narrative of Edge of Memories transports players to the lesser-known continent of Avaris, where its nomadic inhabitants are locked in a struggle against the devastating Corrosion plague. Players will step into the shoes of Eline, a wandering Soul Whisperer who tirelessly battles this affliction, which is transforming the rich and vibrant ecosystems of Avaris into nightmarish forms. Eline’s journey takes a pivotal turn when she discovers a dark power awakening within her, granting her the potential to harness the Corrosion residing in her very body. Accompanied by her mentor Ysoris and Kanta, the shaman prince of a forgotten tribe, her quest is one of allyship and self-discovery.

Dynamic Combat and Compelling Gameplay

Edge of Memories promises a thrilling combat experience through its innovative combo-based system. Players are encouraged to blend quick strikes with powerful, devastating techniques to maximize their efficiency in battle. The game emphasizes the importance of customizing companions and strategically deploying their unique abilities, which will significantly impact overall success. Additionally, Eline’s ability to morph into a berserker form enables her to unleash powerful attacks, elevating the stakes within combat scenarios.

Immersive Environments and Evolving Worlds

The continent of Avaris boasts a variety of stunning biomes, ranging from the idyllic sandy beaches of the port city Sarlah-Durah to the towering snow-capped Kezal Mountains. Players will maneuver through these platforms using a Nekaroo, an agile and rideable feline companion designed to access hard-to-reach areas. As players progress through the story, the developers have promised that locations previously visited will evolve, leading to intriguing new paths and uncovering deeper narrative nuances. Importantly, the design philosophy of Midgar Studio ensures every quest is meaningful, adding richness to the story and character dynamics without the presence of filler content.

Soundtrack Contributions and Release Date

On the music front, Cédric Menendez has been tasked with crafting the game’s soundtrack, which is set to feature the vocal talents of Emi Evans, celebrated for her contributions to NieR: Automata. Additionally, the acclaimed Yasunori Mitsuda, famed for his work on classics such as Chrono Trigger, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Sea of Stars, will also contribute to the score.Edge of Memories is eagerly anticipated to launch in the fourth quarter of 2025 for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.
