Amidst this chaos, Channing Tatum’s Gambit emerged as a standout performance. His commitment to embodying the character’s distinct quirks and Cajun accent resulted in several laugh-out-loud moments throughout this action-comedy. Many viewers voiced their eagerness to see more of Tatum as Gambit, unaware that he had previously attempted to launch a Gambit film that ultimately fell through, leading him to step back from MCU roles due to disappointment.

Sadly, the ambition for a Gambit solo film met a significant setback when Disney acquired Fox and chose to entirely reboot the X-Men franchise, which included canceling all in-progress projects. Speaking with Business Insider, Lizzy Caplan, who was slated to star in the Gambit film towards the end of 2017, expressed her disbelief about the cancellation, commenting on the project’s distinctive vision.“It was a really cool idea. It’s odd that it got scrapped. It’s surprising considering how rare it is for projects to get halted mid-development.” Caplan reflected.

“We were on track; we were ready to shoot. There had been discussions about timelines. I had several meetings with Channing, and although we had different directors come into play, we were making real progress. The concept was for a 1930s screwball romantic comedy set in that universe, which would have been a lot of fun.”

As the film’s female lead, Caplan had genuine insight into its intended tone, which appears to be quite intriguing. While some fans may not be well-versed in the nuance of 1930s screwball comedies, viewers of Deadpool and Wolverine would likely entertain the idea of Tatum stepping back into the Gambit role, especially given his comedic flair—some clips were reportedly too hilarious for his co-star to keep a straight face, indicating the dynamic energy he brought to the performance.

Although there is a clamoring from part of the fanbase for Ryan Reynolds to initiate a Gambit-focused film initiative at Marvel Studios, there are compelling arguments suggesting that Gambit should remain sidelined until the X-Men receive their dedicated film. Similar to John Krasinski’s brief stint as Mr. Fantastic before the announcement of the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps, it might be advisable for studios to hold off on granting spin-offs to characters from Deadpool and Wolverine until they have concrete plans for their integration into the franchise. Potentially, Marvel could explore new interpretations with fresh casting, akin to what has been demonstrated with characters like Mr. Fantastic and Blade. Fans remain hopeful for Gambit’s resurgence when the X-Men storylines finally unfold in the MCU.
