Overview of the Next-Gen Xbox Console
- The forthcoming Xbox console is rumored to function as a PC housed in a user-friendly design ideal for TVs.
- This innovative hardware strategy has the potential to streamline the development process for games in the upcoming generation.
- The launch of the Xbox Series X/S successors might occur as early as 2027.
According to credible industry sources, the anticipated next-generation Xbox is set to resemble a PC contained within a design crafted for television. This information, shared by a Microsoft expert, signals a transformative shift in the company’s gaming hardware strategy.
Speculation regarding the next Xbox has gained traction in online discussions since the early 2020s, especially following Microsoft’s hints in 2024 about new hardware. Executives have assured gamers that the next iteration will aim for the “most significant technical advancement”seen in a console generation to date.
While specific details remain limited, Jez Corden of Windows Central shared insights in an episode of The Xbox Two Podcast in early March 2025. He noted that the upcoming console would essentially act as a PC with a design catering to television usage. Given that the current Series X and Series S already share a PC-like architecture—utilizing AMD’s APUs featuring Zen 2 CPUs and RDNA 2 GPUs—Microsoft appears poised to bridge the gap between traditional consoles and PC gaming by integrating an operating system more aligned with standard Windows environments.
Simplified Game Development for Next-Gen Xbox
By transforming its console into a more PC-like device, Microsoft could significantly simplify the requirements for game development. Developers may no longer need to adapt to unique APIs and hardware specifics; instead, they could focus on creating PC games optimized for fixed hardware parameters, making the process more efficient.
This hardware redesign would also mean that Microsoft might bypass or postpone the traditional development kit phase. According to Corden, recent discussions regarding a next-gen development kit are “not accurate, ”as the PC-like architecture means developers only need basic hardware specifications to start their work—at least for the foreseeable future.

Anticipation for the Next Xbox Console Release in 2027
During the podcast, Corden reiterated his forecast that the next generation of Xbox could launch in 2027. In November 2024, Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, confirmed ongoing work on a handheld device; however, details remain murky regarding its potential release or whether it might complement the next Xbox generation.
With Microsoft’s engagement in multi-platform game publishing and diminishing Xbox hardware sales, it is uncertain whether the new console can achieve a broader appeal beyond a dedicated fan base. Recent sales data as of late 2024 indicates that the PlayStation 5 outpaced the Xbox Series X/S by a margin of three to one, and Microsoft’s strategy to reduce permanent first-party exclusives may not facilitate a change in this trend.
