Avatar: Fire and Ash Reveals First Look at David Thewlis’ Character
In an exciting update for fans of the sci-fi franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash has unveiled its first glimpse of David Thewlis’ Na’vi character. Following the unprecedented success of Avatar: The Way of Water, which took the box office by storm in 2022, James Cameron’s acclaimed series is gearing up for the release of its third installment. The narrative of Fire and Ash is set to unfold after the events of The Way of Water, where the Sully family, still in mourning, encounters two new Na’vi clans: the Ash People and the Wind Traders. Intriguingly, Thewlis’ role within this complex storyline has remained shrouded in mystery until now.
Unveiling Peylak: The Chief of the Wind Traders
Empire has recently published new insights into Avatar: Fire and Ash, shedding light on Thewlis’ character, Peylak, who is introduced as the chief of the Wind Trader clan, also referred to as the Tlalim. The initial artwork portrays Peylak in a stunning orange robe paired with a unique braided hairstyle, a first for the Avatar series, and distinct from the teal complexion of the Metkayina clan. This vibrant aesthetic contrasts sharply with the traditional blue skin typical of Na’vi characters.

Costume designer Deborah L. Scott, in discussing the Wind Traders, noted their stark contrast to the malevolent Ash Clan. She described the Wind Traders as full of joy and color, with Thewlis embodying his character with great charisma:
“They’re upbeat, happy, colorful. And when they come into our movie, everyone’s excited to see them. It’s like the circus is in town.”
“Originally, [Peylak’s] cloak was a little more rugged, a little more rustic. But as all the clans developed, Jim [Cameron] said, ‘I just don’t think it’s grand enough.’ So I went back and reinvented it. The way [Thewlis] carries himself, he’s got great posture. He’s absolutely stunning in the movie.”
The Impact of Peylak’s Character on the Avatar Series
David Thewlis, renowned for his portrayal of Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter series and appearances in other notable works including Wonder Woman (2017) and War Horse (2011), is stepping into a significant role that could reshape the dynamics established in previous films.
Complex New Dynamics with the Na’vi
The addition of new characters like Thewlis and Oona Chaplin to the cast of Avatar: Fire and Ash indicates a further exploration of Pandora’s complex social landscape. While Peylak is designed to be amicable, Chaplin’s character, Varang, will lead the Ash Clan, potentially creating tension between these two groups. Cameron has hinted that the Ash People will complicate the existing narrative of “good Na’vi versus evil humans, ”introducing moral ambiguity as Varang will go to great lengths to protect her clan.
In contrast, the Wind Traders, described by Cameron as nomadic and adventurous—akin to medieval camel caravans on the Spice Road—employ large flying airships for travel, far exceeding the size of conventional ikran.
Peylak’s Role in Maintaining Franchise Balance
With the film’s release still approximately ten months away, fans are left to speculate on how Peylak’s character will interact with the established themes of loss and resilience within the franchise. Given the emotional climax of Avatar: The Way of Water, Thewlis’ character may serve as a beacon of hope and joy, complementing the breathtaking beauty of Pandora and providing audiences with a welcomed respite from darker themes.
As anticipation builds, it is evident that Avatar: Fire and Ash promises to blend familiar elements with fresh, innovative concepts, reinforcing the enchanting allure of Pandora and its inhabitants.
