New Features Expected for Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons

Overview

  • Potential functionalities of the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might include a mode that allows them to function similarly to a computer mouse.
  • Recent shipping manifests indicate the use of adhesive tape, commonly found on the bottoms of computer mice, linked to one of Nintendo’s component suppliers.
  • The Switch 2 wouldn’t be the inaugural handheld console to incorporate a mouse-like mode, as demonstrated by Lenovo’s Legion GO in 2023.

New evidence suggests that the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could potentially operate like computer mice. Despite uncertainties regarding widespread developer interest in this feature, it aligns well with Nintendo’s established pattern of innovation and experimentation.

This intriguing possibility was initially highlighted by Famiboards user LiC, who uncovered Vietnamese customs data pertaining to shipments from a Nintendo component supplier. This information has sparked numerous rumors and speculation about the Switch 2 since its emergence in mid-2024.

In January 2025, LiC revisited Famiboards to share additional insights, revealing the identification of a polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape noted in shipping documents as being “designed to attach to game console handles.” Significantly, these shipments referred to these tapes as “mouse soles,” a term typically linked to the base of a computer mouse. The reference to such mouse soles in a potential Switch 2 parts list implies that this new console might be able to replicate mouse-like functionality.

LiC has noted two distinct model numbers for the mouse soles: LG7 and SML7. However, these designations do not appear in any accessible component databases, indicating that they likely belong to new, unreleased products. The data suggests that the tape pieces measure 90 x 90mm, which seems ample to cover the full back of the new Joy-Cons, though some trimming might be necessary during assembly.

Nintendo Switch 2: Not the First Console to Feature Mouse Controller Mode

Though the mouse-like functionality aligns with Nintendo’s innovative spirit, it is crucial to note that such technology has already been adopted in the gaming industry. For instance, the right controller of the Lenovo Legion GO can also be utilized as a mouse when deviated sideways into a joystick-like position. Lenovo has even included a circular accessory to facilitate sliding the device across surfaces efficiently.

Furthermore, Lenovo’s 2024 handheld device incorporates magnetic rails for seamless attachment of controllers, a feature that has also been rumored for the Switch 2. This development suggests that the Legion GO may provide insights into the potential design and capabilities of Nintendo’s anticipated hybrid console.
