Latest Enhancements to Microsoft Excel: September 2023 Update

Microsoft Excel continues to be an essential tool in organizational environments, renowned for its robust data manipulation capabilities and its integration within Microsoft 365. Recently, Microsoft announced a significant upgrade to Copilot in Excel, introducing context awareness. Alongside this, the company detailed an array of new features rolled out over the past month, enhancing user experience across all platforms.

New Context Awareness Features

The most prominent update applies to Excel users on Windows, Mac, and the web, all of whom will benefit from the enhanced context awareness available in Copilot. This upgrade allows Copilot to better understand the context of data within spreadsheets, streamlining tasks and improving overall efficiency. Value Tokens for Rich Data Formats

Excel for Windows and Mac now supports value tokens, which visually indicate the type of rich data formats present in specific cells. For instance, users dealing with geographical data or currencies will see corresponding icons that represent these formats clearly within the cells, helping to enhance data comprehension and usability.

Advanced Formula Generation

The web version of Excel has also been enhanced with an innovative Copilot feature that simplifies formula generation. By typing the “=”symbol in any cell or in the formula bar, users can describe the type of data manipulation they wish to execute. Copilot will then automatically generate the appropriate formula, making it easier for users to perform complex calculations without extensive Excel knowledge.

Mobile Accessibility Improvements

For Excel users on mobile devices, a noteworthy improvement allows users to view shared Excel files online without requiring sign-in with a personal Microsoft account. While editing or commenting on these files still necessitates sign-in for tracking purposes, this feature is currently available exclusively to Insiders on Android devices. Additionally, the iOS Insiders community can now search for Excel templates, a highly requested feature that Microsoft has classified under “Feedback in Action (#FIA).”

Engagement and Feedback Invitation

Microsoft encourages customer engagement and further input regarding Excel features. Users can provide feedback directly within the software or through the dedicated feedback portal.

These updates reflect Microsoft’s commitment to continually improving Excel as a leading data management tool, catering to the evolving needs of its user base.
