How to Request Edit Access
To utilize this new functionality, users can follow these straightforward steps:
- Open the desired Excel, Word, or PowerPoint file in the web version.
- Click on the Viewing icon located in the upper-right corner.
- Select Request more access.
- Choose either Ask to edit or Ask to review, depending on your requirements.

- Hit Send!
Upon receiving the request, file owners will be notified via email, containing the access request and any notes included. They can easily approve or decline the request straight from the email interface. If approved, users can refresh the document to access the newly granted permissions.
Important Considerations and Availability
Microsoft has also pointed out that granting access may take some time, particularly for large or complex documents, or those with multiple collaborators. Additionally, this feature is unavailable in the Classic View of Word for the web. However, it is accessible to all enterprise customers with Microsoft 365, provided they have a reliable internet connection, and the files in question are hosted on OneDrive or SharePoint.
