PlayStation’s suite of first-party studios is renowned within the gaming industry, sparking considerable excitement among fans keen to learn about upcoming titles from iconic developers like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. In recent years, PlayStation has bolstered its family of studios by acquiring established collaborators such as Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite. Now, eyes are on this fresh, unannounced studio that promises to deliver something intriguing.
Located in Los Angeles, this unnamed first-party PlayStation studio is said to be developing a “ground-breaking” AAA IP. This information surfaced from a job listing for a Project Senior Producer, which highlights the existence of a “newly-established AAA studio”in the region. There are a few theories regarding the studio’s origins, with one possibility being that it is associated with the spin-off team that was set to work on Bungie’s Gummybears incubation project. This initiative was mentioned amid the layoffs at Bungie in July 2024, where 155 employees were integrated into Sony Interactive Entertainment’s operations.
Potential Origins of PlayStation’s New Internal Studio
Another strong candidate for this new AAA studio could be the team led by Jason Blundell, who earned his reputation as a notable developer for the Call of Duty: Black Ops series. Previously, Blundell co-founded Deviation Games, where the studio was in the early stages of creating a unique AAA title for the PS5. However, after facing undisclosed challenges, Blundell left Deviation Games in 2022, which ultimately folded in March 2024. By May 2024, several former employees from Deviation Games had joined PlayStation to form a new team under Blundell’s guidance.
Considering the time Blundell’s team has had to progress compared to the Bungie spin-off, it would not be surprising if PlayStation’s new internal studio is primarily focused on projects led by Blundell. While the specific direction of this team’s development remains uncertain, there is speculation among fans that they might continue or restart the ambitious AAA project that Deviation Games was initially working on.
