Netflix’s My Melody & Kuromi
An Original Story by Sanrio
The upcoming series, titled My Melody & Kuromi, was officially unveiled on January 9th via Netflix’s Japanese website. This original animated offering promises to showcase the delightful escapades of these two characters, employing a distinctive stop-motion animation style (think along the lines of Wallace and Gromit). Set in Mariland, their canonical home, the first artwork revealing the characters’ stop-motion designs was also revealed, creating significant buzz among fans.
This series marks a special celebration of two major milestones: My Melody’s 50th anniversary since her debut in 1975 and Kuromi’s 20th anniversary. While neither character may eclipse Hello Kitty’s global fame, they hold a cherished place in the hearts of many, both in Japan and internationally.
At the helm are award-winning creatives Asaki Misato and Mumeko Nemoto, whose impressive track records inspire confidence. As this marks the first major stop-motion venture from studio TORUKU—a division of WIT STUDIO—anticipation is high amid a seasoned team and beloved characters, setting the stage for success.
