Warhammer MMO Cancellation: Jackalyptic Games Shuts Down

In a disappointing turn of events for massive multiplayer online (MMO) gaming enthusiasts, the anticipated Warhammer project at Jackalyptic Games has officially been canceled following the studio’s closure. This unfortunate announcement comes from Jack Emmert, a veteran in the MMO industry known for his pivotal roles in iconic games such as City of Heroes, Champions Online, and Star Trek Online.

The Journey of Jack Emmert

Emmert has had an extensive career in game development, including significant contributions to DC Universe Online during his time at Daybreak. After the team responsible for DC Universe Online was restructured into Dimensional Ink Games in early 2020, Emmert embarked on an unannounced project that ultimately evolved into a planned Marvel-based MMORPG. Sadly, that project was also shelved by Daybreak’s parent company, Enad Global 7. However, Emmert pressed on and established Jackalope Games (later rebranded as Jackalyptic), supported by funding from NetEase. In May 2023, it was revealed that the Austin-based team was developing an MMO centered around a Warhammer intellectual property.

Vision for the Warhammer MMO

In a conversation shortly after the project’s announcement, Emmert shared his vision for the game, emphasizing its accessibility and the importance of faithfully representing the Warhammer IP. As a lifelong aficionado of the franchise, Emmert’s dedication to its authenticity was among his primary objectives. Unfortunately, the global trend of studio closures, particularly by NetEase, has now led to Jackalyptic’s downfall.

Official Announcement and Transition Plans

On LinkedIn, Emmert communicated the news with a heartfelt message:

I’m here to share a note that after nearly three and a half years working with NetEase Games as a first-party studio, our partnership will be coming to an end. We appreciate all the support NetEase Games has provided with their resources and engagement throughout this development process.

He further stated that as they navigate this significant transition, the talented members of Jackalyptic’s team will be seeking new opportunities in the gaming landscape. Emmert encouraged potential collaborators to reach out, highlighting the team’s creativity and professionalism.

Impact on the MMO Scene

This closure represents another somber chapter for MMO fans, following the recent shutdowns of Amazon’s New World and the now-abandoned The Lord of the Rings MMO project, alongside the disappearance of Fantastic Pixel Castle’s Ghost MMO.

The Future of Warhammer in Gaming

Although the Warhammer franchise remains a vibrant part of the gaming industry, its MMO footprint has waned since the closure of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning in 2013, which was the only MMO to be released under the fantasy franchise—albeit maintained by a dedicated fanbase through the private server Return to Reckoning. The sci-fi counterpart, Warhammer 40, 000, saw a similar fate with the MMO-like third-person shooter Eternal Crusade, which was ultimately discontinued by developer Behavior Interactive in September 2021 due to dwindling player numbers.
