Neil Gaiman Responds to Sexual Assault Allegations: “I Don’t Acknowledge Any Abuse”

This article discusses sensitive topics related to sexual assault and abuse.

Amid ongoing backlash, renowned author Neil Gaiman has publicly addressed recent allegations of sexual assault against him. Following his notable successes with Netflix’s The Sandman and Prime Video’s Good Omens, five women came forward in July 2024 alleging that Gaiman had assaulted them at different times. The claims led to the suspension of production on Good Omens Season 3 and the adaptation of Disney’s The Graveyard Book, with Gaiman stepping down as showrunner for the latter project.

After a period of relative silence following these developments in September, Gaiman faced further scrutiny with the release of a comprehensive report by Vulture on January 13, which delved into the allegations in detail. The report featured interviews with eight women, including accounts from Scarlet Pavlovich, formerly the nanny of Gaiman’s child with ex-wife Amanda Palmer, who described being coerced into performing various sexual acts and experiencing assault in front of his son. Neither Gaiman nor Palmer agreed to interviews, opting instead to communicate through representatives.

In a blog post published just over 24 hours after the Vulture report went live, Gaiman broke his silence regarding the allegations. In his statement, he expressed feelings of “horror and dismay”upon witnessing the various narratives circulating about him online and elaborated on his motivation for responding now:

Over the past many months, I have watched the stories circulating the internet about me with horror and dismay. I’ve stayed quiet until now, both out of respect for the people who were sharing their stories and out of a desire not to draw even more attention to a lot of misinformation.

Continuing his response, Gaiman acknowledged that while some stories resonated with him, he has “never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity”with anyone:

As I read through this latest collection of accounts, there are moments I half-recognise and moments I don’t. I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.

In his reflection on the messages exchanged with the women who accused him, Gaiman stated he perceived them as indicative of “two people enjoying entirely consensual sexual relationships.”He described the context of those interactions as “positive and happy”at the time:

I went back to read the messages I exchanged… They read now as they did when I received them – of two people enjoying entirely consensual sexual relationships and wanting to see one another again.

However, he expressed regret, acknowledging that he “could have and should have done so much better,”recognizing his emotional unavailability at the time and candidly admitting to being “obviously careless with people’s hearts and feelings”:

I could have and should have done so much better. I was emotionally unavailable while being sexually available… I was selfish of me.

Gaiman emphasized his dedication to self-improvement, stating that he has been engaging in significant introspection over the past few months to better understand his impact on others. He expressed hope for personal growth despite the uncertainty regarding public perception:

I’ve spent some months now taking a long, hard look at who I have been and how I have made people feel… I hope that, with the help of good people, I’ll continue to grow.

Despite his reflections, Gaiman asserted his innocence regarding the more severe allegations, firmly claiming, “I don’t accept there was any abuse.“He reiterated his stance that he has never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity and indicated he is open to accountability for any missteps while refusing to accept an inaccurate narrative of himself:

At the same time… I don’t accept there was any abuse. I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone.

Implications for Gaiman & the Allegations

A Difficult Path Ahead

None

Gaiman’s recent comments closely mirror statements made by his representatives, asserting his innocence regarding allegations of non-consensual sexual encounters. In the context of the #MeToo Movement, it is common for individuals accused of such serious allegations to issue strong denials. Typically, public figures are advised against immediate responses, which makes Gaiman’s decision to address the issue so directly notable.

Nonetheless, Neil Gaiman faces significant challenges moving forward. The path for individuals accused of misconduct is frequently fraught with obstacles, as seen in the cases of Kevin Spacey and Louis C.K., both of whom have struggled to recover their careers post-allegation. Although Netflix is pressing ahead with The Sandman Season 2 and Prime Video has plans for Anansi Boys, the shadow of ongoing controversies may impede the success and reception of these projects.
