Despite their five-year losing streak against the USC Trojans, the UCLA Bruins emerged victorious and ended their deadlock. On the other hand, Oklahoma State University maintained their dominance in the women’s division, remaining at the top of the rankings.
The UCLA Bruins were welcomed by the USC Trojans at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles for the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships play-ins on Friday, March 29.
The first doubles rubber was won by the home team in the beginning of the match. Peter Makk and Lodewijk Weststrate emerged as the victorious team, defeating Timothy Li and Giacomo Revelli with a score of 6-2.
The away team managed to tie the game in the subsequent doubles match, as Spencer Johnson and Emon Van Loben Sels secured a 6-3 victory against Samuel Rubell and Niroop Vallabhaneni.
The Bruins were able to secure a victory in the third doubles rubber, winning 7-5 thanks to the efforts of Govind Nanda and Alexander Hoogmartens against USC’s Volodymyr and Karl Lee.
The singles matches then took place, with the Bruins winning both to secure the victory. Jorge Plans Gonzalez struck first for the Bruins, defeating Niroop Vallabhaneni with a score of 6-1, 7-5.
After winning his doubles match, Alexander Hoogmartens staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Karl Lee with a final score of 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. The remaining singles matches involving Govind Nanda, Spencer Johnson, and Giacomo Revelli were played, but their results did not contribute to the official proceedings.
This win for the Bruins marked their first triumph against the Trojans in five years. Their previous victory over the Trojans occurred during the 2018-19 season, where they defeated them with an overall score of 4-3.
In other news, Oklahoma State University maintained their impressive performance by defeating Cincinnati 4-0, extending their streak to nine consecutive weeks at the top of the women’s ITA Division I rankings.
Ange Oby Kajuru gave Oklahoma State University an excellent start by defeating her opponent Rozalia Gruszczynska 6-2, 6-0. Safiya Carrington continued their winning streak with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Gabrielle Guenther in the second match. Kristina Novak also dominated her opponent Sakurako Watanabe, winning 6-1, 6-0 and bringing the team’s score to 3-0.
In the doubles event, Anastasia Komar and Safiya Carrington carried on Oklahoma State University’s impressive performance by defeating Rozalia Gruszczynska and Gabrielle Guenther 6-2. Ayumi Miyamoto and Ange Oby Kajuru also secured a victory in the final doubles match, winning 6-1 against Vic deSamucewicz and Callie Flanagan.
Despite their victory, they continue to hold an unbeaten record of 21 wins and 0 losses in the ITA Division. They have also accumulated 88.81 points and an 8.8 WTN.
