“Nadal was like blunt force, Djokovic is a wrestler, Federer had grace; best version of Carlos Alcaraz will get more Novak in his game” – Andy Roddick

“Nadal was like blunt force, Djokovic is a wrestler, Federer had grace; best version of Carlos Alcaraz will get more Novak in his game” – Andy Roddick

Andy Roddick has provided valuable insight into the playing styles of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal, in order to emphasize the adjustments that Carlos Alcaraz should make in his own game.

Over the past twenty years, ‘Big 3’ players Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer have been dominant forces in men’s tennis, accumulating a total of 66 Grand Slam titles. A fascinating aspect of their rivalry has been observing how their unique styles of play compare against each other.

During his appearance on the ‘Served with Andy Roddick’ podcast, Roddick offered a breakdown of the distinctive playing styles of each member of the ‘Big 3’. He described Rafael Nadal’s game as a powerful force, comparing it to blunt force trauma because of the physicality he brings to the court.

Similarly, the American likened Novak Djokovic to a wrestler, highlighting his unwavering determination to overpower his opponents and leave them with no means of escape. Meanwhile, he characterized Roger Federer’s style as graceful and distinguished, attributing it to his exceptional racquet skills.

“I think in our generation it was like the players wanted to watch Roger because he could do things racquet skill-wise. And Rafa was like this blunt force trauma of physicality and spin,”he said (at 20:52).

“And Novak is like a wrestler who gets you into holds that you can’t get out of. Whereas, Roger kind of had this grace and he would come out with shots that looked like he was playing video games,”he added.

Despite acknowledging that Carlos Alcaraz incorporates qualities from all three players, Roddick also stated that the young player is still honing his approach as the World No. 3.

He suggested that the Spaniard would reach his “best version”by incorporating more elements of Djokovic’s playing style into his game, placing a greater emphasis on consistency rather than spectacle.

“And now Alcaraz is almost like a combination of all three. He’s still finding his way. I think the best version of himself will be when he gets a little more Novak into his game, where he makes things a little more boring and isn’t spectacular all the time,”Roddick said.

The ex-World No. 1 also noted that Andre Agassi shares the same belief that Alcaraz must adopt a more “tedious”style in order to reach the next level of success.

“When I was with Andre Agassi in Vegas, that’s kind of what he was saying is that he is so spectacular that the next point of success is becoming maybe a little bit more boring on court and kind of getting people and locking them down and not throwing as many uppercuts,”he said.
