N Balaji/A Begemann stun top seeded pair of Ram/Krajicek to enter ATP Houston 250 quarters
Indian fans were ecstatic as N Sriram Balaji advanced to the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles at the ATP 2024 U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston on Wednesday.
In their first-round match, N Sriram Balaji and Andre Begemann caused an upset with a 3-6, 7-6(5), 10-6 victory over top-seeded duo Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek. It is worth noting that Rajeev Ram is a three-time US Open champion and his partner, Austin Krajicek, is currently ranked fourth in the ATP doubles rankings.
It should be noted that, at the current ATP 250 event in Houston, three Indian doubles pairs have successfully secured their opening-round victories.
Despite their efforts, Balaji and Begemann did not have a strong start to the match, losing the first set 3-6. The inability of both players to maintain their final serving games ultimately resulted in their defeat in the first set.
Despite a slow start, Balaji-Begemann managed to make a remarkable comeback as the match reached its conclusion. The tension was palpable in the second set as neither team lost a single game. Finally, the set was decided by a tie-breaker, which was won by the Indo-German duo.
The subsequent set resulted in a super tie-breaker, which was ultimately won by Balaji-Begemann with a score of 10-6.
Balaji-Begemann face tough challenge against Nedunchezhiyan-Kadhe duo in next round
The Indo-German team will next face off against the all-Indian duo of Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Arjun Kadhe in the upcoming round.
Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Arjun Kadhe are entering this match after securing a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the first round against Marcus Daniell and Luis David Martínez.
In the Round of 16, Vijay Sundar Prashanth and Anirudh Chandrasekar defeated former top-10 singles players Frances Tiafoe and Michael Mmoh. Despite their strong start, the pair were unable to maintain their winning streak and were ultimately eliminated by fourth seeds Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson in the quarter-finals.
