A Cinderella-Like Tale
My Happy Marriage has resonated with audiences due to its historical backdrop, supernatural elements, and a narrative reminiscent of the classic Cinderella story. Set during the Taisho Era (1912-1926), it follows the life of Miyo Saimori, who endures the hardships of servitude under her oppressive stepmother. Although she holds onto the hope that her marriage will liberate her from her troubles, her arranged fiancé, Kiyoka Kudou, is infamous for his cold demeanor. However, as Miyo settles into her new life, she starts to uncover the complexities that lie beneath Kiyoka’s harsh exterior.
Originally self-published in Japan, the series garnered popularity, leading to its acquisition by Kadokawa in 2019. To date, eight volumes of the series have been released under the Fushimi Shobo label, featuring captivating illustrations by Tsukiho Tsukioka. Additionally, Yen Press oversees the distribution of these novels in the United States.
A manga adaptation, illustrated by Rito Kohsaka, has been in production since 2018, with five volumes available. Square Enix manages the publication in both Japan and the U.S. To add to its appeal, a live-action film adaptation was launched exclusively in Japanese theaters in March 2023.
Where to Watch and What’s Next
My Happy Marriage made its debut on July 5, 2023, wrapping up its first season with a total of 12 episodes by September 20, 2023. Viewers can enjoy the series exclusively on Netflix, which provides both subbed and dubbed formats for accessibility. Notably, episodes were made available simultaneously with their airing in Japan.
An OVA, labeled as “episode 13,”premiered on Netflix last month. Although it’s technically not a traditional episode, this special installment was originally released in Japan in March to coincide with the eighth volume of the novel. Interestingly, Netflix tends to avoid streaming exclusive OVA content—making this release either a unique case or a sign of evolving strategies in anime licensing.
Fans can rest assured that Netflix has confirmed its commitment to stream the upcoming new season.
