“My dad is still going to work, my mom also; Nobody would have expected this” – Jannik Sinner on dethroning Carlos Alcaraz to become World No. 2

Jannik Sinner has recently shared his joy after defeating Carlos Alcaraz and claiming the position of World No. 2. He also mentioned that his parents had never dreamed of him achieving such a remarkable accomplishment.

At the 2024 Miami Open, Sinner emerged victorious by defeating Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1 in the final on March 31. This marked his second ATP Masters 1000 trophy and his first in The Magic City. It was a sweet redemption for Sinner, who had previously reached the championship match but lost to Daniil Medvedev.

The 22-year-old continues to impress with his current red-hot form, as evidenced by his recent victories at the Australian Open in January, where he secured his first Grand Slam, and in Rotterdam, where he added yet another title to his collection.

With his win in Miami, Sinner has achieved the historic feat of becoming the first Italian player to reach the top 2 ranking in the ATP. This is expected to be officially announced when the rankings are refreshed on Monday.

In an interview with the Tennis Channel’s Prakash Amritraj following his victory in Miami, Jannik Sinner shared his perspective on his climb up the ATP Ranking ladder. He referred to it as a “tremendous honor”and a “remarkable accomplishment.”

“Yeah, it’s a great honor. It’s great to see. In my mind, it’s still only a number because obviously for me it means a lot, being No. 2. It’s an incredible achievement,”Sinner said.

Sinner added that his family is quite ordinary and that his parents, Johann and Siglinde, could never have anticipated him becoming the second-ranked player in the world.

“Where I come from, I am from a very normal family,”Sinner said. “My dad is still going to work and my mom also. So, nobody would have expected this but it’s great to be in this position. For me, most importantly, if I see improvements on the court, for me it’s maybe worth it more.”

Despite the difficult transition from Indian Wells, where he was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals, Jannik Sinner expressed that his experience at the Miami Open has been “great.”

“It has been a great week,”he told Tennis Channel. “Starting off not feeling that great because coming from Indian Wells to here, completely different conditions and situation.”

The Italian revealed that his composure throughout every match was crucial to his success. He also noted that he significantly elevated his performance in both the semifinal and final matches.

“But, I just try to stay very calm in every match, knowing in my mind that if I get through, maybe I find myself much better and that’s what happened. I raised my level dramatically for semis and final, which I have shown on the court. So, I am really really happy and obviously the result is amazing,”Jannik Sinner said.
