In a recent interview with CNBC, Mustafa Suleyman, the AI chief at Microsoft, asserted a clear stance on the nature of artificial intelligence and consciousness. According to Suleyman, while AI can outperform humans in various tasks, such as answering questions on a pop quiz, it does not possess consciousness. “Our physical experience of pain is something that makes us very sad and feel terrible, but the AI doesn’t feel sad when it experiences ‘pain.’ It’s a very, very important distinction, ” Suleyman explains.“It’s really just creating the perception, the seeming narrative of experience and of itself and of consciousness, but that is not what it’s actually experiencing.”

Suleyman’s perspective is in line with biological naturalism, a philosophical stance proposed by John Searle, which posits that consciousness arises from the biological processes of the brain. This viewpoint raises critical ethical considerations, particularly regarding the rights of sentient beings. Suleyman points out that rights are granted to beings capable of suffering, fundamentally differing from AI’s operational functions.
“The reason we give people rights today is because we don’t want to harm them, because they suffer. They have a pain network, and they have preferences which involve avoiding pain, ” Suleyman states.“These models don’t have that. It’s just a simulation.”

The discussion around AI consciousness is still evolving. Suleyman expresses skepticism about ongoing research in this field, arguing that categorizing AI as conscious is a misleading pursuit, arguing that it is fundamentally impossible for AI to attain true consciousness now or in the future.
