MultiVersus Players Express Discontent Over Game Shutdown

Overview

  • MultiVersus players are voicing their frustration over Warner Bros Games’ announcement to halt the platform fighter’s operations less than a year after its debut.
  • The decision has drawn ire, particularly regarding the Founder’s Pass, as many fans feel they haven’t fully utilized the in-game currency that accompanied their purchases.
  • Despite an enthusiastic start, MultiVersus struggled to maintain traction, resulting in heavy financial losses exceeding $100 million for both Warner Bros and Player First Games.

MultiVersus has faced backlash from its community following the news of the upcoming shutdown, particularly among those who invested in the Founder’s Pack. This title, which showcased a rich array of Warner Bros.characters in a style reminiscent of Super Smash Bros, initially captured substantial player interest upon its 2022 early access release. Yet, following a prolonged wait, the game officially launched in 2023, only to witness its short-lived lifespan cut short.

On January 31, Warner Bros.announced that the servers for MultiVersus would be dismantled within the following months, concluding a brief year of availability. The scheduled shutdown date is May 30, coinciding with the end of the fifth season of competitive play at 12 PM EST. While monetary transactions have already been suspended, players will still have the option to engage in offline gameplay. However, the game will be removed from online platforms on the shutdown date, leaving certain fans particularly aggrieved.

As highlighted by Eurogamer, numerous players are expressing their disappointment geared toward Warner Bros’ decision. The Founder’s Pack has emerged as a focal point of frustration since many players are unable to utilize the complete currency allotted by the package. Currently, MultiVersus includes 35 distinct characters, with five available for free alongside six others made accessible later. In total, those who purchased the Founder’s Pass received 30 character tokens, leading many to call for partial refunds for the unused tokens linked to the package.
