End of an Era: Multiversus Scheduled for Shutdown
Player First Games has confirmed that Multiversus will officially shut down on May 30, 2025. This announcement marks the conclusion of the game, with its fifth season designated as the final installment. Following this, all online functionalities will cease, and the game will be removed from digital storefronts. Nevertheless, players who have already acquired the game will still have the option to play it offline.
Final Season Timeline
The highly anticipated Season 5 is set to commence on February 4, 2025, culminating on the shutdown date. As part of this transition, online player servers will be deactivated, and microtransactions will also be suspended effective January 31, 2025. Players can expect that new characters introduced in this season, namely Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be accessible solely through gameplay. Specifically, Aquaman will be offered as a tier-one reward in the Battle Pass, while Lola Bunny will be unlocked through daily login rewards.
Availability of Game Features
Despite being delisted at the end of Season 5, those logged in during this final phase will retain the ability to play Multiversus offline following the shutdown. This will allow participants to engage in battles against AI-controlled bots or through local multiplayer options. All content purchased prior to shutdown will remain accessible to players, although it remains uncertain if players will find it easier to unlock additional characters in this final period.
Game Performance and Reception
Launched as a competitor in the Smash Bros style fighting genre, Multiversus has encountered a wave of criticism since its debut. Following a promising beta launch in 2022, the game’s player base saw a rapid decline, often attributed to aggressive monetization practices that limited character accessibility. This has likely contributed to the eventual decision to discontinue the game.
Platform Availability
As it stands, Multiversus is playable on various platforms including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, with the end date of May 30, 2025 marking the cutoff for all online activity.
