After months of uncertainty regarding its future, MultiVersus will officially go offline on May 30, 2025, coinciding with the end of its upcoming season. Launched on May 28, 2024, this free-to-play fighting game features iconic characters from popular Warner Bros.franchises, including DC Comics and Looney Tunes.
The Rise and Fall of MultiVersus
Live-service games have proven to be a precarious venture lately, with numerous high-profile titles, such as XDefiant, falling by the wayside. Unfortunately for Warner Bros. Games, MultiVersus is now set to join the roster of unsuccessful releases, as developer Player First Games has decided to end its support just a year post-launch. Despite an enthusiastic response during its early access phase in July 2022 and initial public launch in May 2024, player retention has significantly dwindled. Consequently, the game’s financial impact has been substantial, leading to losses exceeding $100 million for Warner Bros.by late 2024.
The official announcement on the MultiVersus website confirmed that online server support will conclude after Season 5, which wraps up on May 30, 2025, at 9 AM PST / 12 PM EST. Furthermore, the game will be delisted from digital platforms across all consoles and PC. Warner Bros.described the decision to retire the title as made “after careful consideration.”As a precursor to this shutdown, players will be barred from making real-world money in-game purchases starting January 31, yet will still be able to utilize their remaining Gleamium or character tokens until the end of Season 5.
Offline Play Options Available After Shutdown
Fans received a ray of hope with the announcement that MultiVersus will remain available in offline mode after the online servers go dark. Players will continue to engage in single-player battles against AI opponents or team up in co-op matches with friends. To retain access to offline play, users must update the game and log in at least once during Season 5, which initiates on February 4 at 9 AM PST / 12 PM EST.
As we approach the phasing out of MultiVersus, anticipation builds for the final Season 5 update arriving next week. This update promises exciting content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny as rewards for Battle Pass participants, along with daily login bonuses. With the game’s concluding update on the horizon, it might be a fitting time for players to consider downloading MultiVersus for future offline enjoyment.
