Achieving a remarkable speed of 6400 MT/s in a dual-channel configuration is an impressive milestone, especially when utilizing four DDR5 RAM modules on an AM5 motherboard.
Kingston Pioneers with a 192 GB RAM Kit to Reach 6400 MT/s Using Ryzen 7 9800X3D
A recent achievement has pushed the AM5 platform to its maximum potential regarding memory configuration and speed. Notably, AMD’s platforms historically have challenges with attaining high memory frequencies, particularly when compared to the high-end Intel LGA 1851 motherboards that routinely exceed the 12000 MT/s barrier.
While 12000 MT/s remains a distant target, reaching speeds over 1000 MT/s with multiple RAM modules presents significant challenges. This makes the accomplishment of the 192 GB DDR5 RAM kit exceptionally noteworthy. A skilled overclocker has managed to fully utilize the memory capacity supported by the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, as evidenced by a screenshot from the event (via @9550pro).
The benchmark was achieved on the MSI MEG X870E GODLIKE motherboard, utilizing a 2DPC 2R (2 DIMMs Per Channel, Dual Rank) configuration with four 48 GB UDIMM DDR5 RAM sticks from Kingston. Despite AMD’s specifications suggesting that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D could only handle speeds of up to 3600 MT/s and the MEG X870E GODLIKE achieving up to 4800 MT/s via overclocking, this overclocker surpassed those benchmarks to reach a staggering 6400 MT/s.
This remarkable accomplishment comes with its own set of challenges. Operating dual-rank memory with shared channels increases electrical load and introduces potential issues with signal integrity, including reflections and interference. To overcome these obstacles, careful adjustments to latency timings and various memory settings in the BIOS are essential.
According to results displayed in CPU-Z, the CL timings were recorded at 48-48-48-103, which is commendable. The user increased the voltage from 1.10V to 1.40V, and as per RunMemtest Pro, the RAM kit demonstrated low error rates, indicating stable performance suited for demanding tasks.
However, it is important to note that such results are not universally attainable across all X870/X870E motherboards and RAM kits. Additionally, while the combination of 192 GB capacity and 6400 MT/s might not appeal to the average PC user, it underscores the notable progress that the AM5 platform has made in terms of memory compatibility and performance.
