Concerns Arise Over MSI’s 12V-2×6 Connector Design
A recent incident shared by a Reddit user, u/VersauteGurke, has sparked fresh scrutiny of the MSI 12V-2×6 connector. Not merely a standard model, this connector features a distinctive dual-color design aimed at ensuring a secure connection. Yet, despite its intended innovation, it has reportedly succumbed to overheating, prompting questions about the actual efficacy of its design.

This particular user experienced a burned connector while utilizing the official adapter for the MSI GeForce RTX 5090. The connector is also marketed with MSI’s newest 12V-2×6 power supplies, designed to ensure that the yellow-tipped section fits snugly into the GPU port. However, user reports indicate that many have struggled with achieving the proper connection, undermining the argument that these failures are merely due to user error.
Although extensive investigations into these incidents have been undertaken, there is yet to be a definitive solution. The implications of a malfunctioning MSI connector may lead to increased risks for typical connectors, with alarming reports indicating higher failure rates tied to the RTX 5090 and, to a lesser extent, the RTX 5080.

The GeForce RTX 5090 can draw nearly 600W of power, significantly raising cable temperatures—often exceeding 100 degrees Celsius and potentially hitting 150°C in extreme use cases. These elevated temperatures are sufficient to cause melting in both the cables and connectors.
