
As the technology landscape rapidly evolves, anticipation builds for AMD’s upcoming Zen 6 processors, notably concerning their compatibility with existing memory configurations. Notably, it appears that these new CPUs may not support the conventional A1B1 memory orientation. In response, motherboard manufacturers such as MSI are proactively updating their designs, particularly their popular 800 series motherboards.
MSI’s MPG B850i Edge Ti WiFi Adopts DIMMA2/DIMMB2 Design to Possibly Support AMD’s Zen 6 CPUs
Recent reports have emerged suggesting that the AMD Zen 6 architecture might introduce significant changes to the Integrated Memory Controller (IMC) located on the I/O die. As we covered previously, these modifications imply a potential deviation from the traditional DIMM orientation system, which has traditionally relied on DIMMA1 and DIMMB1 configurations for motherboards with two DIMMs.
Uniko’s Hardware has further substantiated this possibility through its latest findings. Their reports indicate that MSI’s MPG B850i Edge Ti WiFi motherboard features a new memory slot configuration termed DIMMA2/DIMMB2. While the retail version utilizes the standard DIMMA1/DIMMB1 layout, Uniko’s findings suggest an alternative design that aligns more effectively with the anticipated architecture of Zen 6 processors.

The introduction of the A2B2 memory configuration, while uncommon for two-slot motherboards, raises the likelihood of further innovations in motherboard designs aimed at supporting Zen 6. This advancement hints at the potential integration of two IMCs within the Zen 6 architecture, compelling manufacturers to reconsider memory slot arrangements to ensure optimal alignment with the CPUs.
As we anticipate the release of Zen 6, it’s clear that MSI and others are adapting to these new requirements, suggesting a bright future for the AM5 platform. This change aligns with the trend towards enhancing performance through improved memory architecture, ultimately reinforcing AMD’s position within the high-performance computing segment.
