Recent developments indicate that MSI is enhancing its graphics card offerings with the introduction of the “Extreme OC”variant, specifically designed for the upcoming RTX 50 series GPUs. This initiative has been highlighted by Unwinder, the lead developer of MSI Afterburner, who announced that he has acquired initial samples showcasing advanced overclocking capabilities.

Unwinder’s recent updates reveal that these next-generation MSI RTX 50 GPUs will feature significant advancements, including an “Unlocked Extended Voltage Control.”This functionality will enable users to push their GPUs further than ever before. Moreover, the future BETA versions of Afterburner are expected to integrate an extensive array of overclocking features, catering to enthusiasts and professionals alike.

In an earlier announcement, Unwinder hinted at the new BETA version set to be released soon, which will support the MP2988 and MP29816A PWM controllers—a component integral to the operation of many RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 GPUs. While these features have been stifled by NVIDIA’s constraints on existing hardware, MSI has collaborated with NVIDIA to enable these functionalities through strategic modifications.

As autumn begins, we anticipate the launch of the MSI AB beta with support for MP2988/MP29816A. We have successfully procured initial working samples of future MSI 50×0 graphics cards, incorporating unlocked extended voltage control and currently undergoing testing.

The forthcoming MSI cards will boast enhanced triple-channel voltage control and monitoring. This allows for core voltage control with a direct PWM access range exceeding standard limits. Additionally, memory voltage control and MSVDD voltage control will be included. Users can also expect VRM temperature monitoring through the dedicated MP29816A sensor.

Regrettably, these features will not be applicable to current reference design cards for the RTX 5080/5090 models, as NVIDIA has restricted access to these PWM controllers.

It is crucial to note that such cutting-edge features will exclusively benefit the new MSI “Extreme OC”models. The triple-channel voltage control facilitates direct access via PWM, allowing for a voltage range of ±100mV—far superior to the current restriction of 0 to approximately 20mV. Additionally, onboard VRM temperature monitoring will be made possible thanks to the onboard MP29816A sensor integrated into these new GPUs.

Many speculate that the “Extreme OC”designation may point towards a revived Lightning series within the RTX 5090/5080 lineup. The Lightning series, known for its exceptional performance and build quality, has been absent since the RTX 20 series, specifically with the RTX 2080 Ti Lightning OC being the last notable release. MSI transitioned to the SUPRIM series as their flagship offering, but the return of the Lightning branding signals exciting times ahead for high-performance graphics cards.
