Most Game Developers View Steam as a Monopoly in PC Game Distribution

According to a recent whitepaper from Rokky, a prominent PC game distribution platform, a survey by Atomik Research provides critical insights into the perceptions of industry leaders. The study involved 306 executives from game studios, with 67% based in the United States and the remaining 33% from the United Kingdom. Notably, a significant 72% of these respondents contend that Steam monopolizes the PC game distribution landscape.

Examining the Alleged Monopoly

While a majority asserts that Steam operates as a monopoly, the question arises: Is it truly the case? As Mat Piscatella, a senior executive at Circana, discusses, and Rokky’s report titled “The State of PC Game Distribution”reaffirms, the assertion is more nuanced.

Alternatives to Steam

The report highlights the presence of alternative platforms such as GOG, itch.io, and Epic Games Store, which challenge Steam’s dominance. Despite the existence of these options, Rokky’s findings suggest a prevailing belief in Steam’s monopoly. An interesting statistic reveals that among the surveyed game developers, 48% have utilized the Epic Games Store, while only 10% have opted for GOG and 8% for itch.io.

The Gray Market Misconception

Interestingly, the survey also uncovered that almost 25% of respondents perceive alternative marketplaces and e-stores as gray markets, which could lead to revenue loss and reduced control. Rokky argues, however, that these platforms like Humble and Fanatical could actually provide opportunities to diversify distribution strategies, rather than detracting from them.

Risks and Opportunities

The ambiguity surrounding what defines the gray market presents a challenge. Many developers may inadvertently overlook significant revenue streams due to misconceptions about these alternative e-stores.“If developers continue to shy away from these platforms under the \ assumption that they fall into the gray market category, they risk missing out on potential income, ” the report states.

Concerns about grey market sellers and regional price manipulation create additional hurdles. However, the notion that participation in e-stores automatically leads to such risks is misleading.

Strategizing for Success

For developers seeking to navigate this complex landscape, the question stands: Should they rely on Steam or explore other distribution channels? While shifting towards various e-stores and marketplaces seems beneficial, challenges such as discoverability, competition from free-to-play games, and the prevalence of subscription services still impact sales.

“Any developer or publisher venturing into alternative distribution must prioritize control over pricing, distribution, and overall game value while remaining vigilant against gray market pitfalls. The road may be fraught with challenges, but with a solid strategy, the potential to reach new audiences and enhance revenues is achievable, ” concludes Rokky’s analysis.
