Windows 11 Rising Dominance in Gaming Market
Windows 11 is swiftly gaining ground on its predecessor, Windows 10, and is on a trajectory to become the most widely adopted Windows operating system globally, with certain regions already seeing it take the lead. Particularly in the gaming segment, Windows 11 has established itself as the leading operating system, experiencing a notable uptick in user migration from Windows 10 as of April 2025.
Steam Survey Highlights Growing Windows 11 Adoption
The most recent Steam Hardware and Software Survey, published in April 2025, indicates a gradual rise in Windows 11’s share within the gaming market. Currently, Windows 11 commands an impressive 57.84% of the total reported Windows users participating in the survey. It’s important to note that participation is voluntary, meaning this statistic does not encompass the entire Windows user base. In just one month, Windows 11 has gained an additional 2.5 percentage points in its market share.
Windows 10 Declines as Support Wind Down
Conversely, Windows 10 has dipped below the 40% threshold, presently holding 38.09%. This decline mirrors the growth of Windows 11, as Windows 10 lost nearly the same amount of users that Windows 11 gained, down by 2.49 points. Given the looming end of support for Windows 10 in October 2025, further losses are anticipated, although major developers like Valve have no immediate plans to abandon the platform.
Steam’s Dominance and Hardware Preferences
Overall, Windows retains a commanding 96.1% share of the gaming landscape on Steam, with Linux and macOS significantly trailing at 2.27% and 1.62%, respectively. Both platforms have seen slight changes, with Linux decreasing by 0.06 points and macOS increasing by 0.04 points.
In terms of hardware, the report highlights a shift in preferences, with the laptop variant of the Nvidia RTX 4060 now becoming the most favored GPU among survey participants, boasting a share of 4.8%.
