Recent developments in the Chinese GPU sector have showcased remarkable advancements, particularly with the introduction of the Moore Threads S90 gaming GPU. Testing reveals that this innovative model has begun to rival NVIDIA’s mainstream graphics offerings, particularly the RTX 4060.
Moore Threads MTT S90 Outperforms NVIDIA’s RTX 4060 in Various Tests Thanks to Enhanced Drivers
Historically, Chinese graphics cards have struggled to compete with their Western counterparts, often characterized by inferior hardware and unoptimized performance. Recent fuel from the AI sector has prompted companies like Huawei and Lisuan to intensify their efforts in developing competent GPUs. Among them, Moore Threads has made notable progress, distinguished by its introduction of PCIe 5.0 technology in graphics cards for the first time, and now, the launch of their capable MTT S90 GPU.
Before examining the benchmark results (via MyDrivers), it’s crucial to note that the performance tests initially conducted involved the MTT S4000, a workstation-oriented GPU closely aligned with the MTT S90 through shared chip architecture. A Chinese tech blogger tested the MTT S4000 for synthetic and gaming performance, demonstrating that it competes effectively with NVIDIA’s RTX 4060—a significant accomplishment for Moore Threads.
Results indicate that the MTT S90 has significantly closed the performance gap with the RTX 4060. Notably, during testing with the popular game Naraka: Bladepoint, the MTT S90 achieved an impressive average of 43 frames per second (FPS) under 4K ultra settings, slightly surpassing the RTX 4060, which managed 42 FPS. Given that earlier Moore Threads models could barely compete with older GPUs like the GTX 1050 Ti, these current achievements signal substantial improvements.
Additionally, Moore Threads has purportedly made great strides in optimizing their drivers; reports suggest that recent enhancements have resulted in a performance boost of up to 80% compared to the previous MTT S80 model. While specific specifications for the MTT S90 remain undisclosed, it is expected to utilize a PCIe 5.0 platform. However, in light of the limited external reviews of Chinese GPUs, it is wise to interpret these advancements with caution.
