Montage Technology, a prominent semiconductor design firm based in China, has recently announced the successful initial sampling of their second generation MRCD and MDB chipsets. This significant advancement is set to propel innovation within the memory technology sector.
Enhanced Performance with Montage’s Latest Memory Innovations
Press Release: In a pivotal development for DDR5 Multiplexed Rank DIMM (MRDIMM) technology, Montage Technology has successfully sampled its second-generation Multiplexed Rank Registering Clock Driver (MRCD) and Multiplexed Rank Data Buffer (MDB) chipsets to leading global memory manufacturers. These cutting-edge chipsets can achieve data rates of up to 12800 MT/s, offering exceptional advancements in memory performance tailored for next-gen computing architectures.
This launch comes at a critical juncture, as the growing demands for memory bandwidth in data centers are primarily driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and big data analytics. The MRDIMM technology has become vital in meeting these demands, especially as the core counts for server processors continue to rise.
The MRCD and MDB chipsets are essential to the operation of MRDIMM modules, utilizing a unique “1+10” buffer architecture. Each MRDIMM module consists of one MRCD chip alongside ten MDB chips. In this configuration, the MRCD is responsible for buffering and re-driving address, command, clock, and control signals, while the MDB chips facilitate data transmission between the memory controller and the DRAM components.

This sophisticated architecture, enhanced with double data rate technology and time-division multiplexing, allows for the simultaneous operation of two memory ranks at standard rates, effectively doubling overall data throughput.
Previously, Montage’s first-generation MRCD and MDB chipsets supported data rates of up to 8800 MT/s, already garnering significant interest and volume purchases from major memory manufacturers. The newly engineered Gen2 chips not only elevate performance standards but also achieve 12800 MT/s—a remarkable 45% increase over their predecessors. Additionally, Montage Technology encompasses a broad array of support solutions for memory interfaces and modules, which include RCD, DB, CKD, SPD Hub, PMIC, and TS.
Looking ahead, Montage Technology plans to initiate sampling of their Gen5 DDR5 RCD (RCD05) chip in Q4 of 2024, broadening their comprehensive and industry-leading portfolio. These innovative products facilitate one-stop sourcing for clients while ensuring optimal integration and performance across systems.
