Monster Hunter Wilds Weapon Upgrade Guide: Tips for Enhancing Your Gear

In Monster Hunter Wilds, almost every adversary you encounter boasts a significant health bar that you’ll need to chip away at over the course of battle. While preserving your weapon’s sharpness is essential for inflicting maximum damage, enhancing your weaponry through upgrades is equally critical. This not only boosts your total damage output but also provides strategic advantages against particular monsters.

The upgrade system in Monster Hunter Wilds is intricate, allowing various enhancements tailored to counter specific monsters or favor your preferred damage types. Instead of a straightforward leveling system, players must understand the underlying mechanics to avoid wasting valuable resources. Here’s a detailed guide on how to efficiently upgrade your weapons.

To upgrade your weapons, visit any camp and speak with Gemma, the Smithy, who accompanies you throughout your journey and is stationed at each base camp across the regions. When you approach her, select the first option: “Forge/Upgrade Weapons”.

Upon choosing a weapon for upgrade, you’ll be presented with an extensive upgrade tree that outlines the enhancement paths available. Each tree is linked to a specific monster, allowing that weapon to gain unique affinities and stats that mirror its counterpart. For every weapon category, there exists a fundamental weapon: either Expedition (Metal) or Bone, each offering multiple alternative upgrade trees.

When you defeat a new monster, you also unlock additional recipes for crafting weapons that utilize the materials you’ve acquired. Gemma provides you with a list of the materials required for each upgrade in the middle of the upgrade menu, and upon confirming your choice, she will promptly execute the upgrade. Additionally, many upgrades have a second-tier option available that necessitates rarer materials obtained from more challenging, high-rank versions of the respective monsters.

Crafting Additional Weapons

If you’ve invested in a weapon along a certain upgrade tree, you might consider exploring a different version of that weapon type. Fortunately, you can simply recraft the basic weapon to pursue enhancements in an alternative upgrade tree. This is easily achieved by selecting the initial option in either the Expedition or Bone tree for that particular weapon type. You can subsequently upgrade this newly crafted weapon along a different path without impacting your original weapon’s state.

While the foundation for basic upgrades can often be sourced through exploration, specific upgrade trees are tied to particular monsters. When viewing the upgrade menu, you can see the materials needed and the corresponding monster you must hunt to collect the required resources. Engaging in Optional Tasks and targeting the relevant monsters can efficiently yield the necessary materials. Ensure to aim for critical hits to enhance the drop rates of the desired items and remember to carve the monster post-defeat for additional chances at material collection.
