Since the inception of the Monster Hunter franchise, one of the engaging gameplay elements has been the ability to target and sever a monster’s tail. This feature continues in Monster Hunter Wilds, allowing players to engage in thrilling hunts and carve valuable materials from defeated monsters.
How to Cut Monster Tails in Monster Hunter Wilds

To successfully sever a monster’s tail in Monster Hunter Wilds, you must utilize a weapon with a sharp edge. Effective weapon choices include the Sword and Shield, Great Sword, or Dual Blades. While Bowguns can also deal damage to tails, they require Slicing Ammo, which is less effective for this purpose and involves ammo management.
In earlier Monster Hunter titles, a single hit from a sharp weapon was often sufficient to cut off a tail. However, the mechanics have evolved in recent games like Wilds. Now, you need to consistently inflict sharp damage on a monster’s tail for it to be severed.
Why Should You Cut Tails Off in Monster Hunter Wilds?

-
Severing a monster’s parts significantly increases the resources you and your team can acquire. Certain unique weapons and armor pieces require specific materials that can only be obtained by successfully severing monster body parts. If you find yourself ill-equipped, consider upgrading or obtaining a weapon specifically designed for severing, or partner with a fellow hunter who specializes in such attacks.
-
Once you’ve severed the tail, ensure the monster is no longer fighting before you carve for materials. If you’re struggling to detach the tail, try immobilizing the monster using techniques like mounting to hit weak spots, deploying Shock or Pitfall Traps, or utilizing explosives. However, be cautious—inflicting too much damage can cause the monster to fall before you have a chance to sever its tail, forcing you to repeat the hunt.

As of now, Monster Hunter Wilds features 24 large monsters, although many do not have parts that can be severed. Below is a list of notable creatures that do have severable body parts:

- Balahara
- Rey Dau
- Teach
- Don’t cry.

While there’s a slim chance of acquiring a monster’s tail as a reward from Quests and Captures, your likelihood of obtaining it significantly increases when you physically sever it.
