The Monster Hunter franchise is known for its distinctive design choice of omitting health bars, even for its enormous creatures. This trend continues in Monster Hunter Wilds, where the methods for players to intuit monster health status have been notably enhanced.
While there is no straightforward way to monitor a monster’s remaining health, various subtle cues contribute to the overall hunting experience. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you discern how close a monster is to defeat.
Gauging Monster Health in Monster Hunter Wilds

Engaging in a hunt can demand a time investment ranging from ten to fifty minutes, influenced by factors such as the type of monster, your preparedness, and the aggressiveness of your approach. Given that all monsters are equipped with substantial health reserves, patience and strategy are crucial to success. While health statistics are not accessible during gameplay, numerical damage displays offer minimal reference points against a monster’s vast health pool.
Fortunately, the game provides several indicators that hint at a monster’s impending defeat, enriching the hunting experience:
- The monster is prone to tripping or stumbling more frequently and may exhibit limping behavior when navigating between areas.
- Some species may attempt to retreat toward their nesting sites when severely injured.
- As their health diminishes, monsters will exhibit more erratic movements and rely on uncoordinated attacks.
- More body parts may detach during battle, signaling weakness.
- Monsters become easier to stun, particularly when targeting their weakness or head.
- Observations will reveal a gradual deceleration and faintness in their heartbeat.
Additionally, your Palico companion will inform you when the monster is on the brink of collapse, which typically occurs when the creature’s health drops to about 15-20%.
Interpreting Monster Heartbeats in Monster Hunter Wilds

To observe a monster’s heartbeat, you’ll first need to initiate tracking by locating its icon on the map or by locking onto the creature using the following controls:
- PlayStation: Press R3
- PC: Press B
- Xbox: Press the Right Stick
Once your Scoutflies are tracking the monster, its icon will appear at the bottom left of your screen, accompanied by a flashing line that reflects its heartbeat. When the monster is at full health, this line will be prominently blue. As it sustains damage, you’ll notice the lines diminishing in size and frequency.
In scenarios where a monster is feeling threatened or is significantly weakened, the heartbeat line color transitions from blue to yellow and ultimately to red.Yellow and red lines indicate heightened aggression, typically coinciding with health depletion. A red heartbeat line often signifies wild, erratic behavior as the creature becomes desperate.
Interestingly, even at low health, if a creature manages to escape, its heartbeat lines may revert to blue as it calms down, although they will switch back to red upon re-engagement in battle.
