Weapon sharpening is a fundamental mechanic in the Monster Hunter series. As players strike foes, their equipped weapons gradually dull, leading to decreased damage and an increased likelihood of attacks bouncing off enemies.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, the sharpening process has become more intuitive and safer than ever. This guide details how to effectively utilize the Whetstone for weapon sharpening, explains the underlying mechanics of the sharpening system, and offers strategies to minimize sharpening time.
How to Sharpen Weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds

Understanding Weapon Sharpening
Players can sharpen their weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds using the Whetstone item. This item becomes available once you finish the introductory segment and accept the “Desert Trotters”quest. As you engage in battles, your weapon will begin to lose its sharpness, prompting a menu notification that outlines the sharpening process.
According to the game’s weapon sharpness system, each successful hit diminishes the weapon’s sharpness, which results in reduced damage output and can cause attacks to bounce off enemy targets.
The status of your weapon’s sharpness is indicated by a green sword icon in the top-left corner of the screen, adjacent to your resource bars:
- Green: The weapon is at peak sharpness, dealing full damage.
- Yellow or Red: Indicates decreasing effectiveness, signaling hunters to promptly utilize the Whetstone.
Utilizing Whetstones for Weapon Sharpening

To sharpen your weapon, open the radial menu by pressing L1 or LB. Next, tilt the right analog stick upwards to select the Whetstone. After the Whetstone is highlighted, release the analog stick to have your character kneel and sharpen the weapon.
Unlike previous titles in the series, using a Whetstone in Monster Hunter Wilds does not consume the item. Generally, sharpening requires around four cycles, leaving players vulnerable during the process. Fortunately, players can mount a Seikret to gain temporary invulnerability while sharpening.
To effectively sharpen your weapon while avoiding damage, first summon a Seikret by pressing up on the D-pad, then mount the creature to create distance. While mounted, access the radial menu and select the Whetstone as before; your character will sharpen the weapon without receiving damage.
Tips for Faster Weapon Sharpening

Typically, hunters spend around four seconds, or four cycles, on sharpening. However, you can expedite this process through specific Armor and Food skills:
- Speed Sharpening: A skill from certain armor pieces that reduces the sharpening animation by one cycle.
- Felyne Polisher: A Food bonus achievable by cooking two ingredients with the Courage tag, also eliminating one cycle from the sharpening process.
Additionally, players can discover the Whetfish Fin, a specialized sharpening stone that cuts the sharpening time in half (2 cycles).Whetfish Fins can be obtained by catching Whetfish but are consumed upon use. Harvesting this item is highly beneficial in enhancing sharpening efficiency while engaged in combat.
