Monster Hunter Wilds Guide: Techniques to Block Monster Roars

In Monster Hunter Wilds, every monster behavior is crafted to be something players can counter, manage, or completely evade, including their roar attacks. This design is crucial since the game’s central narrative revolves around the Hunter’s Guild—a group dedicated to studying the behaviors of monsters to enhance hunting strategies. Therefore, it is logical to have mechanics in place to neutralize the effects of roars, which are commonly utilized by various monsters.

While roars can disrupt the rhythm of combat, interrupt vital abilities, and stun hunters momentarily, they don’t signify the end of a hunt. Instead, they present a significant annoyance, intensifying frustration with each consecutive occurrence. Fortunately, players have multiple strategies at their disposal to effectively counter these attacks.

Countering Monster Roars in MH Wilds

When facing monster roars in Monster Hunter Wilds, players have several tactics they can employ to minimize their impact. Whether through specific armor skills, weaponry, or alternative mechanics, each option can be highly effective.

Monsters utilize two categories of roars: weak and strong. Although both types inflict the same stun duration and cause no direct damage, weak roars are notably easier to mitigate compared to their stronger counterparts.

Utilize a Shield

One effective strategy to combat a roar is to employ a Guard. When activated prior to a monster’s roar, a Guard can completely nullify its effects. This defensive move is exclusive to weapons equipped with a shield or those featuring shield-like mechanics. Out of the 14 weapon types available in the game, six are capable of guarding: Great Sword, Sword & Shield, Lance, Gunlance, Charge Blade, and Heavy Bowgun.

Equip the Earplugs Skill

The Earplugs Skill is designed to minimize the consequences of monster roars. This skill comes in three tiers, each progressively enhancing a hunter’s resistance to them:

  • Level 1: Reduces the effects of weak monster roars.
  • Level 2: Completely nullifies weak monster roars and diminishes the impact of strong ones.
  • Level 3: Fully negates both weak and strong monster roars.

This skill can be found in certain high-rank armor sets, as well as in the Earplugs Charm I and the Earplugs Jewel 2.

Master the Perfect Dodge

A successful perfect dodge allows players to avoid the stagger and damage entirely when a monster roars. This maneuver demands exceptional timing, and while it may prove challenging, players wielding Dual Blades or Bow should prioritize honing this skill, as it becomes an integral part of their combat strategy.

Executing a Counter Attack

The Long Sword features a unique combination that enables a counterattack in response to various monster attacks, including roars. During this counterattack window, players are granted invincibility frames, rendering them immune to both damage and stagger effects.

Running Out of Range

Every roar entails an Area of Effect (AoE) that has a defined range. Although players might typically be in close proximity to the monsters, predicting an impending roar allows for a strategic retreat from the AoE, evading its impact. While this may seem counterproductive when aiming for maximum damage output, anticipating roars is particularly advantageous since monsters often engage in roaring behavior at the beginning of fights or after repositioning. Becoming adept at recognizing these patterns can significantly improve a player’s ability to predict and react accordingly.

By staying vigilant during these key moments, players can enhance their gameplay and effectively mitigate the challenges presented by monster roars.
