The Monster Hunter Wilds game offers a multitude of ways to customize your character’s build, enhancing both gameplay and combat strategies. The flexible upgrade system means players can experiment with various builds tailored to counter specific monsters or simply to improve their overall performance. As you progress through the storyline, new options for customization will become available, granting you the freedom to shape your hunter’s abilities.
One of the key aspects of enhancing your hunter’s capabilities comes with the introduction of decorations, which are unlocked in the second chapter after defeating The Black Flame. While the benefits of decorations may initially seem modest, they significantly contribute to your effectiveness in battles when combined. Below is a detailed guide on how to equip and acquire decorations in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Equipping Decorations in Monster Hunter Wilds

Decorations vary by level, and their compatibility with armor or weapons depends on the slots available on each piece of gear. To begin, verify that your equipment has space for decorations:
- Access your equipment menu or examine an item at the smithy.
- Check the Equipment Info menu displayed on the right side of the screen.
- The number of slots will be prominently listed — it appears as the second item for armor and fifth for weapons.
The displayed icons will represent the decoration levels your gear can accommodate, such as level 1, level 2, or level 3 slots. For instance, a piece with three slots can hold up to three decorations that match or fall below the respective slot level.
You can equip decorations at Gemma or in your tent by selecting the Change Equipment option. When you see a slot available on your gear, it will be indicated beside the gear’s name. To proceed, click the “Edit Decorations”button at the bottom of the screen to view your decoration inventory and select the desired one to equip.
Acquiring More Decorations in Monster Hunter Wilds

The simplest method for obtaining decorations is to complete main story missions, hunts, or optional quests. After finishing a quest, some rewards can be collected or sold. You will then encounter the Appraisal Box, where you can claim any decorations earned during your adventure. Notably, tackling High-Rank quests rewards you with superior decorations compared to those obtained from Low-Rank missions.
Later in the game, specifically around chapter 3-3, you will unlock the Melding Pot, which allows you to merge your excess or unwanted decorations into potentially better ones. This feature can be particularly useful for improving your build, although success is not guaranteed. Therefore, it is wise to accumulate a variety of decorations through hunting to ensure you have ample materials at your disposal when using the Melding Pot.
