Monster Hunter Wilds is gearing up to be the most expansive installment in the franchise yet, but it has sparked discussions regarding its weapon system, particularly the absence of new weapon classes. Instead, the game will see the return of the 14 weapon types familiar to fans from both Monster Hunter World and Rise, albeit with some notable enhancements. The developers have articulated this decision, emphasizing that sticking to established weaponry allows for a more refined gaming experience.
While the foundational weapon types remain unchanged, Monster Hunter Wilds introduces significant alterations to specific weapons, especially the bowguns and bows. In addition to the usual refinements that players expect, this approach highlights the creators’ commitment to elevating existing gameplay rather than diluting it with new options. In a recent engagement with the press, the reasoning behind this strategy was outlined, revealing the team’s intent to maintain gameplay integrity.
Optimizing Gameplay by Focusing on Existing Weapons

According to director Yuya Tokuda, retaining the existing assortment of weapon classes gives the development team the opportunity to dedicate more resources to enhancing the gameplay dynamics of these tools. Although the addition of a 15th weapon type was considered, it became evident that creating a distinctive new class without overlaps to the current roster would be a challenge. The series already offers a spectrum of choices: from the versatile bow to the swift dual blades and the formidable great sword, it caters to various playstyles. The developers are mindful of this delicate balance and strive to maintain it.
Interestingly, fan reception to the decision not to introduce new weapons seems largely positive. In fact, Monster Hunter Wilds achieved a notable milestone in January by becoming the most-wishlisted game on Steam, outpacing highly anticipated titles like Hollow Knight: Silksong. As the release date approaches—set for February 28—players are eager to see how Capcom’s focus on weapon optimization will enhance their gaming experience.
