Overview

  • Drew Barrymore’s daughters expressed admiration for her role as Casey Becker in the iconic film *Scream*, catching her off guard.
  • The *Scream* franchise captivates audiences with gripping opening kills that set the tone for each installment.
  • *Scream 7* is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026.

The *Scream* series has become a cornerstone of the slasher genre, garnering a passionate fanbase over the years. Following the success of the original installment, which hit theaters in 1996, six additional films have continued to build on its legacy.

Despite modest financial expectations, the first *Scream* film grossed an impressive $173 million worldwide, surpassing its $15 million budget. The franchise includes *Scream 2* (1997), *Scream 3* (2000), *Scream 4* (2011), *Scream 5* (2022), and *Scream VI* (2023), with a seventh film already in the pipeline.

During a recent episode of *Drew News*, Barrymore discussed the delightful reactions of her daughters, Frankie and Olive, after they independently watched *Scream*.Barrymore noted that she avoids pressuring her children to view her earlier work, which they affectionately refer to as “mom movies.”To her astonishment, they declared their love for her performance. Barrymore recounted their enthusiasm:

“They came home the other day and said they watched *Scream*, and they were like, ‘Mom, you got it so good in that movie! Oh my God!’”

As it turns out, Olive and Frankie were with friends during a sleepover when they decided to watch the iconic film. Olive has even mentioned wanting to embody her mother’s character for a Halloween costume in the future: “When I get a boyfriend in high school, that’s gonna be our Halloween costume. He’ll be Steve, and I’ll be you, ” Barrymore shared.

In the original film, Barrymore’s character, Casey Becker, is introduced in a gripping opening scene that has become a hallmark of the franchise. Though she had limited screen time, her shocking death early in the film left a lasting impression on audiences, largely due to her star power and realistic performance.

Consistently, *Scream* films hook viewers with intense killings within the first ten minutes, a technique that has kept audiences fully engaged. In the 1996 original, Barrymore’s character receives a creepy phone call that escalates from playful banter to horrific threats, culminating in a brutal encounter that leaves viewers in shock.

As her daughters are now at ages where many kids explore horror films, it’s perhaps not surprising they found their mother’s performance appealing, despite its graphic nature.

Scream 7 is anticipated to hit theaters nationwide on February 27, 2026, promising to continue the franchise’s legacy of suspense and horror.
