Mojang Confirms Minecraft VR for PC is Ending After PSVR Release

Back in 2016, Minecraft embraced virtual reality on PC, initially offering support exclusively for the Oculus Rift. The following year, this capability expanded to include Windows Mixed Reality headsets. As the VR landscape evolved, all owners of SteamVR-compatible headsets on PC could immerse themselves in the blocky universe of Minecraft. However, Mojang is now planning to discontinue this mode of gameplay.

This change was subtly communicated in the changelog for the Bedrock 1.21.40 update, indicating that support for virtual reality and mixed reality headsets on PC will cease in March 2025:

Our capacity to provide support for VR/MR devices has reached its conclusion. Updates will no longer accommodate these devices after March 2025, when you will receive your final update. Post-update, you can continue playing on PC without a VR/MR headset.

Thanks to its inherent cross-platform design, all virtual reality worlds will remain accessible to users engaging through traditional methods like a keyboard and mouse, a controller, or on different consoles. Moreover, any purchased in-game currency (Minecoins) and downloadable content (DLC) will still be associated with the accounts they were obtained from:

You can continue to create in your worlds, and your Marketplace acquisitions (including Minecoins) will still be usable on non-VR/MR devices, like a computer monitor. However, VR/MR headsets will no longer function with Minecraft following the latest updates.

This announcement follows closely on the heels of Mojang’s decision to discontinue PlayStation VR support. Much like the PC VR headsets, the PSVR feature will also become unavailable in March 2025.

Although Minecraft will soon lose its official VR functionality, PC users and Meta Quest players can still explore community-driven alternatives like Vivecraft (for Java Edition) and Questcraft, respectively.
